Famous fish market in our region
Assalamu Alaikum. Greetings to the Sri Lanka community. How is everyone doing? I hope that, by the infinite grace of Allah, you are all doing very well. Alhamdulillah, by His infinite grace, I am also doing quite well. I pray to Allah that we may always remain in good health and well-being.
Today, I would like to share something interesting with you. Near our village, there is an upazila (sub-district) town, which also serves as the location for our local post office.
About 5 kilometers from our home, there is a marketplace where all kinds of daily necessities are bought and sold. A haat (a traditional periodic market) is held there twice a week.
Today, I would like to introduce you to a fish market. Salampur is located about five kilometers from our home. A haat (a periodic local market) is held there twice a week—on Thursdays and Sundays.
Beyond these haat days, a fish market operates there every single day. People from far and wide come to this market to purchase a wide variety of fish.
Fish traders typically wake up very early and head to the wholesale fish depots (aarats). Currently, these depots primarily deal in indigenous (native) fish species. To the west of our area, there are many low-lying regions; these areas contain an abundance of water and serve as hubs for the trade of various native fish species. Fish traders from our locality travel there late at night to procure their stock. After purchasing the fish at wholesale prices, they return to begin selling them at the Salampur market starting at 10:00 AM.
In addition to native fish species, farmed fish are also sold here. One of the best and most convenient aspects of this market is that the price per kilogram of fish is kept remarkably low.
While rui (rohu) fish weighing one kilogram might sell for 300 taka per kilogram in other markets, you can purchase fish of the same quality and weight here for only 240 to 250 taka per kilogram. You could almost call it a "fish fair."
Just as a fair features a wide variety of goods, this market offers a diverse range of fish. There are many types available—some I know by name, while others are unfamiliar to me—but all are sold at very affordable prices.
I believe this is an accessible fish market, well-suited for middle-class families. Fish of various price points and qualities can be found here.
Finally, I am glad to have had the chance to introduce you to a favorite local fish market in our region. Thank you for watching, and thank you for being a part of the Sri Lanka community.
