Hello steemians, today I will be writing about the movie that completely reasonates with my life experiences struggles, join my as I write on "Hidden Figures".

Choose a character you strongly relate with

One of the reasons why I chose Katherine Johnson is the idea that one does not have to be loud and assertive to prove his/her worth. The scene from the movie when John Glenn demanded the computer calculations to be verified by Katherine before launching was quite telling of the fact that people tend to trust your abilities only if they are consistent. This reminds me of a football match which I played with friends when I did not get a chance among the first to play as some people did not believe me capable enough. However, instead of becoming angry and frustrated I just waited for my moment. When one of the players got tired I was allowed to play. I showed great skills and scored two assists. By the end of the match, those people invited me to join their side once again. Similarly to Katherine, I understand that people will start to trust your abilities if you consistently prove them right.

Also, the way Katherine was able to stay patient even when she was faced with unfairness resonates with me. In the movie there was a scene where Katherine ran across the whole NASA campus to be able to use the toilet because of the segregation. And although she had such a long run and spent so much time, she came back to her desk and solved calculations that nobody else was able to solve. It reminds me of a time when I had a severe problem with my boss at a phone repair shop when all I did was to work hard in order to prepare myself at all times to assist my boss. I faced a lot of problems just to learn how to work with him efficiently, all I did was stay focused and true to myself. Now when I look back on this experience I fill grateful for having gone through it.

Mention the similarities between you and that character?(Struggles and strength)?

• We know how it is to be underestimated and underestimated all over and over in life. The scene that touched me personally was when Katherine had to run across the whole NASA campus every day to go to the "colored" toilet instead of using the toilet closest to her workplace. Embarrassed and tired, she continued to work with excellence anyway. This reminds me about the situation in which I received a task that many people considered too complicated for me to do. Not arguing with anyone, I tried to develop myself and performed the task perfectly. As Katherine, I have understood that sometimes the best way to show your true strength is to act consistently excellently.

• It is our common trait that we find courage in not surrendering in times of hardship. I recall how Katherine was prevented from participating in essential conferences just because of her being a woman. She did not settle with that, but continued to work so persistently that she was unable to hide her expertise, and ultimately got what she deserved – a seat at that conference table. That was similar to my situation because once I failed to accomplish something I strived for really hard. For a minute I was ready to give up since everybody around me moved forward while I was standing still. But I started all over again, learned my lessons and improved myself. Now I can be thankful that I did not surrender since that was a challenging time for me.

• We all understand that learning is a strength that never stops growing. One of the moments that I liked the most was when Katherine checked John Glenn's complicated calculations despite the fact that computers had done this already. The reason for that was that John Glenn had total trust in Katherine because of her knowledge and accuracy. It makes me think of a situation when I needed to understand something that I found really complicated. There were several options of either memorizing the answers or putting some extra effort into understanding the material. As the result, I gained enough confidence to teach someone else who had similar problems.

What lessons have you learnt from that character?

Lessons I Learned from Katherine Johnson

• Never allow people's opinion dictate your self worth. In the scene where Katherine eventually opens up on the reasons behind her going to the bathroom far away from workplace was extremely touching. She was carrying that weight all alone without letting it interfere with her work. Seeing that episode made me understand that I will never let anything unfair, bad opinions included, make me feel less valuable. From then, I realized that I should concentrate more on the things I could do, which is my attitude and my hard work, and not try to please everybody.

• Preparation brings about opportunities. Before John Glenn took off for his first spaceflight, he wanted Katherine to check the computer’s computations herself because she was more trustworthy than the computer. This particular moment taught me that trust comes as a result of preparation. It made me think back to all those instances where I prepared myself for a very crucial opportunity. Even though I had worked hard and was tired, the time had come and I felt confident within myself.

• Bravery does not always come with noise. Katherine was not a loud girl who always argued with everybody else. She revealed her bravery by her tenacity, intelligence, and perseverance. It motivated me because I came to realize that I don’t have to be the loudest in order to impress people. Just being silent, hardworking, and persistent will help me gain respect automatically.

• The determination of one individual can motivate many other people. Through Katherine’s efforts at the end of the movie, people started looking at women and African Americans at NASA differently. Seeing the recognition received by Katherine made me understand that success does not just mean reaching certain targets, but it also means providing opportunities to other individuals. This understanding has motivated me to operate with integrity since I am aware of the fact that my determination today can motivate somebody tomorrow.
