A Culture That deserves Respect, Not Ridicule.
One thing that truly saddened me was seeing the harsh and disrespected comments at a group of Northerners who were simply enjoying a mealt together from one large serving. It's was perfectly fine if that style of eating is not your preference but mocking an entire region, culture or ethnic group before of it is unfair. Every culture has tradition that makes it unique and those traditions deserve understanding rather than insults. Before judging others we should remember that respect diversity is what keep a nation united.
The truth is that eating from one plate is not exclusive to northern Nigeria. Many families across different parts of Nigeria grew up sharing meal this way and similar traditions can even be found in other countries around the world . It is more than just a way of eating, it is a symbol of togetherness, equality and unity . Sitting around one meal reminds everyone than no one is greater than another and that family is built on bath sharing of food and love.
As I think back to the old days, I can't help but smile. Back then, if brothers and sisters had an argument during the day , it was often settled when everyone gathered to eat in same plate . Laughter will replace anger and the meal will continue in peace . You hardly dare to eat before your siblings arrived because Sharing the meal was part of the joy. Even the younger ones looked forward to the end of the meal because the older ones will often leave them the tastiest piece of meat. Those little acts of kindness strengthened the family bonds in ways words cannot fully describe.
Respect everyone traditions, it is often their love language.
Perhaps today's fast-paced digital world has changed many of these beautiful traditions, but that does not make them outdated or shameful. They remind us of time when families spent more time together, trusted one another and celebrate simple moments of happiness instead of ridiculing such customs, we should appreciate the value they represent , love, unity, generosity , respect and belonging. Cultures like this are part of our heritage and preserving them means preserving the beautiful stories that shaped who we are.
