How Did We Survive When There Was No Electricity? (Part Two)

in Steem4Nigeria • 7 days ago
In my previous post, I shared my childhood memories of how electricity eventually came to my village, including the opposition that surrounded the project.

Today, I want to talk about something that has been on my mind.

How did we survive all those years when there was no electricity?

Seriously, how did we do it?

When I look at the present generation and the way we live today, I realise that there are so many things we do that would be difficult without electricity.

Think about it.

Today, we charge our phones, watch television, use electric fans, preserve food in refrigerators, iron our clothes, and operate different appliances that make everyday life easier.

Some people even depend on electricity to earn their daily income and some depend solely on electricity to run their businesses on a daily basis.

Yet, from the very beginning of my village's existence, electricity was nowhere to be found. My people lived without it for many years, and life continued regardless.

All we had for lighting were lanterns. There were no refrigerators in our homes like we have today, and many of the electrical appliances we now consider essential were not part of our daily lives.

We managed with what was available to us.

People cooked their meals, went to their farms, attended to their businesses, raised their children, visited their neighbours, and carried on with their daily activities.

Life went on, even though things were different from what we have today.

But when I think about it now, I cannot help wondering how we managed certain things without the conveniences we enjoy today.

How did we cope with the darkness at night?

How did we preserve food without refrigerators?

How did people go about their daily activities without the electrical appliances we now depend on?

Somehow, people found ways to live their lives, and they survived.

Have We Become Too Dependent on Electricity?

Sometimes, I wonder whether we have become so accustomed to modern conveniences that we can hardly imagine living without them.

Today, if there is no electricity for several hours, some of us become frustrated. If the outage continues for a day or two, the complaints increase.

Honestly, I understand why. Life has changed, our needs have increased, and many of our daily activities now depend on electricity.

Still, thinking about the past makes me appreciate how human beings adapt to their circumstances.

I am not saying that living without electricity was better. Electricity has brought enormous benefits to our homes, businesses, education, healthcare, and general standard of living.

I am simply amazed by how much life has changed.

Something that was once completely absent from our village has now become an important part of our everyday existence.

Over to You!

For those who grew up in villages or communities without electricity, how did your families manage life back then?

What did you use for lighting? How did you preserve food? What activities did you do differently because there was no electricity?

And for those who cannot imagine living without electricity today, do you think we have become too dependent on it, or is it simply a natural consequence of modern life?
