Background

In the fifth week, there was an interesting challenge that encouraged me to take part: to create an original film of my own. This was quite appealing, as I have a rather simple imagination.

I’ve been working on this short film of my own for almost two days now. It’s based on a true story I once came across, and I’m trying to adapt it into a film in line with the competition’s challenge.

There is a message in this film I have made, a message you will discover as you watch it scene by scene. I hope you find it.

The Essence of the Competition

🎥 Film Information 🎥

Film TitleTime
GenreEmotional Drama
CharactersHendri as the son, Danil as the father, Nita as the mother

Plot

Danil and Nita are a humble married couple who live in a small house. They are not wealthy, they grew up in an orphanage and are far from well-off, yet they are bound together by a sincere love and a commitment to the values of kindness.

Their life is often far from easy. Sometimes they have to scrimp and save to make ends meet. A single plate of food shared between the two of them, with whatever side dishes are available if any is their daily fare.

Eventually, they were blessed with a son, though they were left with debts from the delivery. Nevertheless, they continued to do their utmost for Hendri, their only son.

They could not afford material possessions. Indeed, instead of milk for Hendri, they had to make do with rice water. Yet Danil and Nita always showered Hendry with affection, love, an education and guidance.

For Danil and Nita, that was the best gift they could give Hendri. Ever since he was a child, Danil had always encouraged Hendri and spurred him on to keep learning and never give up.

"Study hard, my dear child, knowledge will change your life and guide you in the future."

That was the advice that Hendri was always reminded of.

Nita also always taught Hendri to be a good and honest person. In fact, those were the words Nita repeated to Hendri every day.

“Don’t just be successful, be a good and honest person,” said Nita.

As Hendri grew older, he would usually just nod as he listened to all the advice Danil and Nita gave him every day. Although at the time, he didn’t really understand what it all meant.

As the years went by, Hendri grew into a man. Although his family had many shortcomings, they never failed to provide him with affection, love and guidance. He continued to learn from his failures, knowledge gave him strength and guidance showed him the way. It was exactly what he had learnt from his parents.

Despite all the heartache, failures, humiliation and discrimination he had endured, Henry eventually became a successful man. He secured a good, well paid job, lived in a luxurious and comfortable home, and was well known to many people. He led a life he could once only have imagined.

🎥------

One evening, at the height of his success, Hendri suddenly bought something expensive, something very special. No one knew what he was thinking, but he bought it on the spur of the moment for Danil and Nita, his parents.

He went to the old house where he used to unwind and find love; it looked much the same, apart from the grass, which had grown a little longer. As he drew nearer, Hendri wanted to show Danil and Nita how well he’d done. He wanted to see their faces when they found out about his success the result of their upbringing.

As the door to his parents’ house opened, the only sound to be heard was the ticking of the clock’s hands as they moved round the dial. Tick… Tock… Tick… Tock…

Hendri’s gaze fell upon two dusty photo frames on the wall, containing pictures of his parents, Danil and Nita. Moving towards the small chair positioned directly in front of the photos, Hendri sat down.

A faint smile spread across his face, and tears slowly rolled down his cheeks. Silent, yet piercing to the soul. He spoke, his voice choked with sobs.

“My dear Mum and Dad, I realise you are no longer with us,” said Hendri.

“I am grateful for all the guidance you have given me over the years,” he added.

"In my hands, I hold an expensive gift box for Mum and Dad." His tears flowed even more freely.

"A watch for you, Dad, and a bracelet for you, Mum." And at the end of his speech, Hendri said,
"Because of time, I miss Mum and Dad"

That’s my simple short film; I hope that with this post, I’ll receive positive feedback and comments from all of you. I’d like to tag @alee75, @radjasalman and @ikwal.

Saludos.
