Animal Breeding :

Animal breeding refers to the planned mating of animals to produce offspring of a superior breed.

In simpler terms, it involves mating high-quality males and females to produce offspring that yield more milk, provide more meat, or possess greater strength and vigor.

Why is Animal Breeding Important?

1. To Increase Production:

We aim for cows to produce more milk, hens to lay more eggs, and goats to gain weight more rapidly. All of this is achievable through effective breeding.

2. To Improve the Breed:

If a local (indigenous) cow produces 5 liters of milk and an exotic (foreign) breed produces 30 liters, we can crossbreed them to develop a strain that is both heat-tolerant and capable of yielding 15–20 liters of milk—for example, the Sahiwal x Friesian cross.

Key Methods of Breeding

1. Selection:

This involves choosing the best animals from a herd. For instance, keeping the offspring of a cow that yields the highest amount of milk for future breeding, while removing weaker or less productive animals.

2. Inbreeding:

The mating of closely related animals (such as siblings). This is generally considered harmful, as it often leads to the development of diseases and physical weaknesses in the offspring.

3. Outbreeding – The Most Beneficial Method;

The mating of unrelated animals. There are two primary types:

A) Crossbreeding:
The mating of animals from two different breeds. For example:

• Indigenous Sahiwal cow + Exotic Friesian bull = High-yielding crossbred cow.
• This is the most widely used method in Pakistan.

B) Artificial Insemination (AI):
This is the most modern and successful method used today.

• Semen from a high-quality (superior breed) bull is preserved in a laboratory.
• A veterinarian introduces this semen into the cow using an instrument (syringe/insemination gun).
• Benefits: Offspring from thousands of cows can be produced from a single bull; it prevents the spread of diseases; and it is very cost-effective.

Benefits of Good Breeding:

1. Increased Milk and Meat Yield: Better breed leads to better production.
2. Disease Resistance: Animals of superior breeds are more robust against diseases.
3. Earlier Maturity: Animals of superior breeds reach maturity and reproduce at an earlier age.

4.Higher Profit for Farmers:

Greater output for the same level of expenditure.
