Pick And Write Strip Cropping # 41
In the name of Allah the most beneficial the most merciful.
Hello Friends 💕. How are you all? Hopefully you are all fine and good by the grace of Allah. I am also fine by the grace of Allah. Welcome to another episode of Agriculture contest Pick And Write Strip Cropping contest.
What is Strip Cropping?
Strip cropping is a very effective and inexpensive way to prevent soil erosion and maintain soil fertility. In this, the farmer divides his land into long strips.
In one strip, a crop is planted that covers the soil (such as betel nut, garlic, peanuts) and in the adjacent strip, a crop is planted that leaves the soil bare and is at risk of erosion (such as corn, sorghum, cotton).
When rainwater or wind comes quickly, the densely planted strip stops the speed of this water and wind and prevents the soil from flowing away.
Types of Strip Cropping
1. Contour Strip Cropping:
This is done in mountainous areas. The strips are made on the contour lines, exactly opposite the slope, so that the water cannot flow down. It is very useful in the areas of Pothohar, Swat, Murree in Pakistan.
2. Field Strip Cropping:
It is done in plain areas where the risk of wind erosion is high. The strips are made perpendicular (90 degrees) to the wind direction to stop the wind. It is useful in Faisalabad, Thal and Cholistan.
3. Buffer Strip Cropping:
In this, permanent strips of grass or leguminous crops are planted between the valuable crop, which act as a buffer (barrier).
Benefits of Strip Cropping
Reduction in soil erosion by 75%: This is its biggest benefit.
Conserving water: Rainwater is absorbed into the ground, does not flow away.
Increase in soil fertility: When a leguminous crop (such as Barsim) is planted in a strip, it takes nitrogen from the air and deposits it in the soil, which benefits the next crop.
Pest control: Due to different crops, pests do not easily move from one crop to another.
Increase in income: Two crops are obtained at the same time, the risk is reduced.
Best combinations for Pakistan
- Maize in one strip + Beans / Groundnuts in another strip
- Wheat in one strip + Barsim / Garlic in another strip
- Cotton in one strip + Sorghum / Bajra in another strip
Understand with a simple example
Suppose you have 1 acre of sloping land.
You will divide it into 4 strips:
Strip 1: Corn (4 meters wide)
Strip 2: Berseem (4 meters wide)
Strip 3: Corn (4 meters wide)
Strip 4: Berseem (4 meters wide)
When it rains, the soil flowing from the corn strip will be trapped in the berseem strip and will not be lost.
