My Okra Project field work at JOSTUM Research Farm - Week 2 Update 16/09/2026

I am happy to share my okra project farm with you. I started this project two weeks ago at the back of my school at the research farm in Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi South core.

It wasn't easy for me at first, because this is school and am very far from home. I mean no implement for me to start my work at all. Implement such as Cutlass, hoe, rake and so on. So I had to look for villagers around to help me out. But their price was too much.

So I borrowed Cutlass from my caretaker and started the work by myself. God so kind, my friend Victor was around so he helped me too. We both clear the plot, take land measurements and make ridges by ourselves.

That makes me to save the money that was meant to spend on the clearing and making of ridges.

My project farm size is 12×13 meter. I chose this place because it is easy for me to monitor as a student and the soil there is okay(fertile )for okra.

For land preparation, I started with clearing. I cleared all the weeds and made the ridges ready for planting. It was stressful but I enjoyed it because it is part of my practical as a B. Agric student.

Right now my okra is 2 weeks old. It has germinated well and growing fine. It has not started flowering yet for it is still at vegetative stage. I am observing it everyday to make sure pest does not disturb it, and maybe start irrigation been a while it rained here.

My plan for next week is to apply fertilizer. As you advised me before, week 2-3 is the right time to apply first fertilizer to boost growth. I will be using NPK 15-15-15.

So far I have spent about 15,000 naira on clearing, making ridges and planting. I will keep you updated on my spending as the farm goes on.
