Spreading positivity and creativity through my words.

Beyond the Map

When our minds are overwhelmed by the crowd of bricks, wood, and concrete around us in this mechanical city of Dhaka, we yearn to smell the earth or find our roots. Many of us may pass by Sher-e-Bangla Stadium No. 2 in Mirpur every day for work. But in my case, it is a little different. Whenever I cross the stadium and look at this handicraft market on the side of the road, my mind is filled with joy. When I see the colorful items made of jute, hanging lampshades, wooden bangles, and bamboo and rattan baskets arranged on the sidewalk, it seems that even in the midst of mechanical life, our thousand-year-old folk tradition is still alive and vibrant!

A fusion of traditional handicrafts and crafts of Mirpur 2

To me, this market is not just a collection of shops, but rather a unique address for the city dwellers to touch our roots.

Basic information about the place:

  • Place Name: Mirpur 2 Traditional Handicrafts and Crafts Market

  • Location: Mirpur 2, Behind Stadium, Near Footpath, Dhaka, Bangladesh

1. Where is this place located, how can visitors reach it, and when did you visit it?

This traditional market is located in Mirpur 2 of Dhaka North City Corporation. Walking along the side of the road, just after the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, you will see these handicraft shops lined up.

I think it is very easy for anyone to get here. You can reach here by taking a bus from anywhere in Dhaka and getting down at Mirpur 2 Bus Stand or Mirpur 10 Roundabout and walking for two to three minutes. You can even get there easily by taking the metro rail and getting down at the Mirpur 10 station and walking or taking a rickshaw. I myself visited this wonderful place with my family on the afternoon of August 10, 2026.

2. What tradition, craft, occupation, food culture, or community practice makes this place culturally significant?

In my view, this place is basically a unique exhibition center for traditional handicrafts, jute art and bamboo-rattan folk art of Bangladesh.

In my opinion, handicrafts mean things made with the touch and emotion of the craftsman's hands that carry the identity of a particular society and culture. In this era of plastic and melamine, our golden jute products were almost lost. But when you come to this market, you will see how everyday items are being made using a combination of jute, yarn, bamboo, and glass. This effort to keep our folk heritage alive for urban people has made the place very important from a cultural point of view.

3. How has this heritage been preserved and passed from one generation to another?

Talking to some of the artisans in the shop, I realized that this work is not just a job or a business—it is a love that runs in their blood. These people, who came to work as children under the guidance of their fathers, have learned the basic techniques of weaving and finishing from their elders.

In my opinion, the artisans of the current generation are doing a great job of preserving this ancient weaving art—they are adding a touch of modern design to it. By combining the finishing of cloth with palm leaf hand fans or modern designs on jute mats, they are keeping this art alive from one generation to the next.

4. How does this living heritage contribute to the local community or economy today?

Here are my observations about the role of this place in the local society and economy:

  • A livelihood for marginalized artisans: Many artisans from villages and cities, especially housewives who make these jute items or bird nests at home, are getting the right price for their labor through this market.

  • A new dimension in home decor: This is a great place to buy aesthetic items at low cost, especially for women who love to decorate their homes.

  • A touch of eco-friendly living: In my opinion, using jute and bamboo products instead of plastic is also a blessing for the environment.

5. What can visitors see, learn, or experience here that helps them understand the local culture and heritage?

A visitor can experience some very beautiful things here, such as:

The extraordinary transformation of ordinary raw materials: It is truly amazing to see how such beautiful plant holders or lampshades can be made using a little jute thread, bamboo, or a discarded glass bottle.

Handmade flower and fruit crafts

Introducing children to tradition: I think that if you bring the younger members of the family here, they will understand how much more valuable these handmade crafts are than the mechanical plastic things bought from the store.

Feeling a pull towards local crafts: Spending some time in this market, you will unknowingly develop a kind of respect and love for local craftsmen.

6. What challenges could threaten this heritage, and what can be done to help preserve it for future generations?

In my opinion, the challenges that are threatening this industry are the following:

  1. It is becoming increasingly difficult to survive by competing with cheap products from plastic and China.

  2. As the prices of jute, yarn, and related raw materials are increasing, the profit share of the artisans is decreasing.

  3. Since the shops are open on the sidewalks, the hard-made products are often damaged in storms and rains.

What I think we should do:

  • The City Corporation should arrange a specific and secure stall or shed for these artisans.

  • Increase the promotion of these domestic products through online social media and attract young buyers.

  • Arrange loans on very easy terms to provide financial support to the artisans.

The story behind the video and my experience:

When I was shooting the video for this post, I had my little daughter and my wife with me. To be honest, it was a great joy for me to come to such a traditional place with them. My daughter was so happy to see the colorful things arranged around her that words cannot describe.

Personally, I think that traditional handicrafts are those works made with utmost care by human hands, which carry our history and culture for generations. While shooting the video, whenever I was holding the camera towards the entire roadside market, the hanging lampshades, and the dreamcatchers, I felt that our traditions are so beautiful that they have survived despite thousands of obstacles.

Conclusion

The time spent with my family at this handicraft market in Mirpur 2 has created a different kind of love in my mind. Especially when I saw the surprise and joy in the eyes of my little girl, I really felt how alive our folk culture is! I believe that if we leave plastic to decorate our homes and buy a jute mat or clay item made by our local artisans, not only will our homes be beautiful, but also a hundred-year-old culture will survive and a craftsman family will survive. If you have time, you can also visit this beautiful place near Mirpur 2 Stadium with your family or friends!

Through this challenge, I have tried my best to bring this beloved place that has changed the course of my life to you.

I have set 10% as a beneficiary for @steem-atlas to support this project.

I would like to invite @mahadisalim, @oswaldocuarta, and @saxopedia to participate in this contest. Hope to see your wonderful entries! 🙂
