SVM Summary So far

in SVM - EVM on STEEM23 days ago

Hi everyone

Welcome to this week's Steem Virtual Machine (SVM) community update! We've had an incredibly productive week with major milestones in network growth, governance execution, security preparedness, and technical documentation. Let's dive into everything that happened!

Network Growth: From 17K to 32K+ Blocks

This week, the SVM testnet demonstrated exceptional stability and continuous growth:

Progression Timeline:

  • Start of Week: 17,000+ blocks produced with 10 validators online
  • Mid-Week: 32,000+ blocks with oracle activity surging
  • Current Status: Network remains healthy with consistent ~5.3 second block times

Transaction Activity Explosion:

  • Week Start: 684 total transactions
  • Week End: 1,400+ transactions (over 100% increase!)
  • Total Fees Generated: 45.703216 STEEM

Why the surge in transactions? The high volume is being driven by our oracle price feeds continuously pushing updates to the chain. This is exactly what we want to see as we stress-test the EVM execution layer under constant data-ingestion loads!

Governance Milestone: Proposal 1 Successfully Executed

This week's biggest achievement: We successfully transitioned SVM to a zero-inflation economy!

What Changed:

  • Inflation Rate: 13.00% → 0.00%
  • Inflation Max: 20.00% → 0.00%
  • Inflation Min: 7.00% → 0.00%

Why This Matters:

The SVM testnet will no longer mint new asteem tokens for validator rewards. Instead, validators are now compensated purely from transaction fees generated by network activity. This is a critical stress test that allows us to:

  • Monitor the fee market under real conditions
  • Observe EVM gas mechanics with a fixed supply
  • Test deflationary mechanics and fee-burning

Result: The state transition occurred smoothly with zero network downtime!

Security Update: Cosmos EVM Vulnerability Response

We maintained full transparency regarding the Cosmos EVM security incident that affected several chains in the ecosystem.

The Situation:

  • Vulnerability: Critical flaws in staking precompiles and vesting accounts
  • Affected Chains: KiiChain lost 148M+ KII tokens; MANTRA and TAC temporarily halted
  • Cosmos Labs Response: Released official patches (v0.6.2 and v0.7.2)

SVM Status:

No exploit detected on SVM
Testnet remained operational
Proactive monitoring activated

Next Steps: We are preparing a v4 governance proposal to integrate the official Cosmos Labs security patches into SVM binaries. This is a precautionary measure to ensure absolute security before mainnet deployment.

Technical Achievement: Multi-Language Oracle Protocol

We published a comprehensive technical specification for the SteemVM Oracle Client Protocol—a critical infrastructure component that enables validators to run bridge attestations and price feeds.

Key Accomplishments:

  • Python Client: ✅ Live broadcast confirmed (gas_used: 171,697)
  • JavaScript Client: ✅ Live broadcast confirmed (gas_used: 168,015)
  • Go Client: Protocol defined, validation pending

Why This is Important:

The protocol ensures that Go, Python, and JavaScript oracle clients can produce byte-for-byte compatible transactions. This multi-language support gives validators flexibility in their infrastructure choices while maintaining network consensus integrity.

Technical Deep Dive: The protocol uses Cosmos SDK's SIGN_MODE_DIRECT with Keccak256 hashing and strict 18-decimal formatting to ensure deterministic transaction signing across all implementations.

Documentation & Validator Onboarding

We released comprehensive guides to make joining the SVM testnet easier than ever:

Featured Resources:

  1. How to Set Up a Brand-New SVM Validator — v0.0.3

    • Automated new-validator.sh script
    • Step-by-step walkthrough from zero to validator
    • Includes faucet funding and oracle configuration
  2. SteemVM Oracle Client Protocol

    • Complete cryptographic specification
    • Test vectors for all implementations
    • Live broadcast validation results

What's Next for SVM?

Immediate Priorities:

  1. v4 Security Upgrade: Prepare and execute governance proposal to integrate Cosmos EVM patches
  2. Validator Growth: Welcome more validators to the active set (currently at 11 nodes)
  3. Go Oracle Client: Complete live-broadcast validation
  4. Fee Market Testing: Continue monitoring network behavior under 0% inflation
  5. Block Height Milestone: Approaching 60,000+ blocks produced!

Long-term Vision:

  • Mainnet readiness with battle-tested security
  • Full IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) integration
  • Native Chainlink support exploration
  • Expanding the Sherpa Protocol DeFi suite

Remember: SVM is strictly in its testnet phase. All bonded STEEM, transactions, and tokens are purely for testing consensus and EVM execution layers. There is no real-world monetary value attached to this chain or its assets.
