About half things

A square. I imagine: a square. In it I think of a diagonal. I divide the square along this diagonal. Now I colour one triangle white and the other black in my mind. Then, in my imagination, I join the two right-angled triangles on their long side (which has a name, I know; but if I type it here, I'll be taken for who I don't like to be taken for) - so, I put the triangles together so that they form the square again. One half white, one half black. Now, if I say, "The square is half white," the psychologists, and I mean all of them, or at least many of them, or at least some of them, well, at least certainly one of them, say, "He didn't say 'half black,' so he's an optimist." If I had said, "The square is half black," that psychologist would have said, "He's a pessimist." At least, that's how I think of it now.

Now for something completely different: You walk into a room, there's a glass on the table. It is exactly cylindrical, you can see that at first glance, and halfway up it has a mark. Exactly at this mark is also the surface of a liquid, let's say: Grape juice. You know nothing else about the glass, nothing about the situation in the room. Whether you call it half full or half empty is necessarily only due to chance or your inner context, because you know nothing about the external circumstances. Maybe you just think, "Oh, half a glass of grape juice." Maybe you are very thirsty and drink it up. Then it is empty.

Whether it was half full or half empty before is decided by the context. Without an external context - for example: you watched it being filled halfway, then you can call it "half full" with good reason - your current internal context plays the decisive role. In this respect, the above psychodemago..., er, psychologist is perhaps a little right. But only maybe and only a little, because he doesn't know me and can't judge whether I often tend to see something running low - oops, oh no, my square wasn't full or empty, but black and white; that is, whether I like white better than black and if so why and so on.

So a half-empty/full glass, and that's all I wanted to say, has to do with so many factors, and the amount of liquid in it is only one. But the fact that "one" can look at it this way or that way is itself only half the story. The whole truth about grape juice is much more extensive. It is connected with Einstein's reality, which is a so-called local one. And with @Udabeu's reality. In it, processes take place, not only in space-time, but also in sense-space.

The space-time process of the glass gradually filling up as it is poured or becoming empty as it is drunk out (thinking with the straw so that the level can be nicely observed as it sinks) is accompanied by the sense-space process in which the content is evaluated. If I have to drink the content even though I don't want to and even though it doesn't taste good to me, then when I pour it I can say to myself: "Good thing, still half empty!" or "Oh horror, already half full!"

The space-time reality is always already there when you get somewhere. You bring the sense-space-reality with you yourself, and what you bring with you can differ significantly from one another at different space-times, although the observable circumstances that you judge to be full or empty, to be good or bad, may look the same. This, I believe, is what Heraclitus, to whom the koan is attributed, meant: You can't get into the same river twice.

 4 years ago (edited)

Yes! Absolutely Yes! Reality is not important, it does not exist at all outside our consciousness, for each of us. The object that perceives this reality is important. matrix in general. Give me a pill!

Reality is not important, it does not exist at all outside our consciousness, for each of us.

On the other hand: since our consciousness is all we have, reality INSIDE this consciousness can get very important.

Not to forget: there ARE things outside our consciousness, but theses things have no reality for us until they enter our consciousness by some perception and interpretation. We seem not to be able to willingly suppress such perceptions and interpretations we do not like. This is simply because we cannot know what we like before we percept and interprete...

"Do not like," in my view, is a mental perception, not just one aspect of perceiving reality, but one of the most essential attributes of life itself. Even for understanding what one likes and dislikes. As a rule, over time, negative perceptions are perceived as external impetuses for the individual's inner development. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

This is some kind of evolutionary view, it seems to me.
So, liking or disliking may be something I 'perceive' even before I check WHAT I perceive: I do not like a sound (and THEN qualify it as the sound of an enemy), I do not like a smell (and THEN regard the smelling thing to be rotten).
This means: whilst I'm listening or smelling, not before it and not after it, I like or dislike the perception.
Is this the way you are speaking of?

There's a first impression, and then there's a considered opinion about the sensation. Pain is perceived as an alarm signal and is extremely unpleasant. For example, if we have a toothache, we perceive external intervention through pain—we go to the dentist for treatment—and experience a euphoric sensation of the pain's end as the source of the unpleasant sensations. Throughout the process, we acquire certain knowledge in the form of a chain of sensations and store them in the subconscious, unconsciously and consciously, gaining new insights into reality that sometimes emerge through associative circumstances we encounter in everyday life. Understanding the world and ourselves in the world is sometimes painful or delightful, but we continue to use our own patterns of relating to reality, expecting certain sensations and outcomes in our decisions. When we sit down to drink tea, we expect a pleasant tartness and heat, but we don't consider that the ceiling could collapse on us during our tea party. In this case, reflexes of aversion to tea arise, associatively linked to the unpleasant surprise of a delayed reflexive reaction. Similar things are observed in birth trauma—a certain pattern of behavior that defies logical definition. Our subconscious is a vast abyss, filled with everything. But by accumulating our experiences, whether positive or negative, we become who we are, each with our own unique individuality. This explains our perception of the world, based on our accumulated experience. A sound may be pleasant if we've heard something similar before and found it pleasant, or unpleasant if negative associations surface.

When we sit down to drink tea, we expect a pleasant tartness and heat, but we don't consider that the ceiling could collapse on us during our tea party.

For a moment, let's assume: we DO consider that a sudden event could destroy our lives or kill us completely.

What would be the consequences of such considering?

Normally, we use to consider the ongoing of our lives, i.e. we search to gain friends and try to get the money for housing, and clothing, and eating .

Now, if we consider our lives to end very soon, what impact would this have on us? Could we dismiss all sorrows about the next day? Could we get free in a deep sense? Could we drink our tea in such a freedom? Or would it occur that we jump on our feet and - instead of drinking tea - dance to the sound of our singing?

The thing is, everyone reacts differently. Thinking about tomorrow while living today just doesn't cut it. The same goes for the past, it's gone. We are today, now. If you want to jump up, you can; if you want to scream, you're welcome, many options are available. Perhaps the tinsel of social politeness is superfluous in such a situation )))). Panic is also possible—the worst case scenario, and practically uncontrollable, based on a damaged nervous system (birth trauma, stress, depression, etc.), meaning it can come uncontrollably. Can we find freedom? Yes. And not necessarily in a critical situation, it's enough to turn off all fears. But there's a downside here, - without survival reflexes, fears act as warnings, it's quite easy to foolishly cross the line, and that's wrong. Therefore, chasing freedom in the matrix of reality EARTH in this sector of space is quite illusory. ))) All that's left is to drink tea and enjoy life as much as possible, and you can sing between sips.))))
By the way, I'll go make some tea)))
