In the world-renowned anime series 'One Piece,' the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is most often seen as a cheerful, lighthearted, and fun-loving character. However, when he enters the battlefield—or when he needs to protect his friends from danger—his demeanor shifts; his sharp, steely gaze transforms the entire atmosphere. It is this serious, resolute, and determined side of him that truly reveals the strength of his leadership.

As an anime fan, while I love Luffy’s cheerful smile, I find his fearless, determined expression equally thrilling. For this piece, I decided to move away from his usual, happy-go-lucky persona and instead capture his serious, powerful, and iconic look against a dark background. My primary goal was to highlight the gravity of his character by creating a striking contrast between the dark backdrop and his signature bright straw hat and red attire.

Step 1

In the first step, I used light blue lines against a solid dark background to sketch the basic structure—outlining his face, his large eyes, his straw hat, and his clothing. This stage was crucial for establishing the intensity in his gaze—filled with fierce resolve—and the taut, focused expression on his face.

Step 2

In the second step, I removed the initial, rough blue sketch and replaced it with clean, crisp white lines. This refined line art brings out every detail: his sharp, piercing stare, the firm contours of his face, and the scar beneath his left eye—all rendered with complete clarity.

Step 3

In this step, I began by filling the anime character’s most striking feature—his iconic straw hat—with a light yellow/golden flat color, and added a red outline along the collar of his shirt. Against the dark background, the color of the hat makes the character instantly pop.

Step 4

In the fourth step, the base or "flat" colors have been applied to the entire illustration. With solid dark black for the hair, a vibrant red for the outfit, a red border on the hat’s ribbon, and a natural skin tone, Luffy’s classic color scheme is fully realized.

Step 5

In the final, fifth step, bold 3D shading has been added to give the illustration a serious and dramatic look. Deep shadows have been cast on the lower part of the face, the neck, the hat, and within the folds of the clothing; this makes Luffy—standing against the dark background—appear even more realistic and compelling.
