Scalability and transaction processing capacity have always been a major challenge in the world of blockchain technology. In traditional blockchains like Bitcoin or Ethereum, all nodes have to come together to come to a consensus on the timing and order of transactions when creating a new block, which slows down the network. To solve this problem, the Solana blockchain has introduced a groundbreaking technology—Proof-of-History (PoH). PoH is not a consensus mechanism, but rather a cryptographic timestamping mechanism, which has given the Solana network an unprecedented speed of processing thousands of transactions per second. The core workings of Proof-of-History technology work like a clock. It uses a high-quality cryptographic hash function (SHA-256) to create a consistent and immutable time record. In a typical blockchain, nodes have to exchange messages with each other to confirm when a transaction occurred, which wastes a lot of time. But with PoH, Solana attaches a digital timestamp to each transaction. This allows each node in the network to independently determine when a transaction occurred and whether it occurred before or after another. Nodes do not have to wait for other nodes to respond to match the time, which reduces data processing time to near zero. The excellent combination of PoH with Proof-of-Stake (PoS) is the key to the Solana network’s unprecedented speed. PoH fixes the order and timing of transactions in advance, while PoS quickly approves and validates those transactions. As a result, the Solana network is theoretically capable of processing about 65,000 transactions per second (TPS), with a block time of just 400 milliseconds. Additionally, Solana has extremely low transaction fees—a tiny fraction of a cent per transaction. Solana’s incredible speed and low transaction fees make it an ideal platform for high-frequency trading, DeFi protocols, Web 3.0 gaming, and NFT marketplaces around the world. Where other chains struggle with network congestion or scalability issues, Solana can execute transactions in real-time with ease thanks to its PoH. However, this high speed comes with its own challenges. Solana validator nodes require extremely powerful and expensive hardware setups to maintain proof-of-history and high speed. This makes it difficult for ordinary users to run nodes, which increases the risk of centralization. Ultimately, proof-of-history is a revolutionary addition to blockchain architecture. This eliminates the traditional complexity of time calculations, making Solana one of the fastest and most efficient blockchain networks in the world and playing a leading role in ensuring the scalability of the decentralized internet in the future.
