The universe
The universe is everything that exists—space, time, matter, energy, planets, stars, galaxies, and all forms of life. Scientists estimate that the universe is about 13.8 billion years old, having begun with an event known as the Big Bang.
Our home, the Solar System, is located within the Milky Way Galaxy, which contains hundreds of billions of stars. Beyond the Milky Way are billions of other galaxies, each filled with countless stars, planets, and other celestial objects.
Some of the major components of the universe include:
Galaxies: Massive collections of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter held together by gravity.
Stars: Giant balls of hot, glowing gas that produce light and heat through nuclear fusion.
Planets: Celestial bodies that orbit stars. Earth is the only known planet to support life.
Nebulae: Vast clouds of gas and dust where new stars are born.
Black Holes: Extremely dense objects with gravity so strong that not even light can escape them.
Scientists continue to explore the universe using powerful telescopes and space missions. Many mysteries remain, including the nature of dark matter and dark energy, which together make up most of the universe but cannot yet be directly observed.
The study of the universe, known as astronomy and cosmology, helps us understand where we came from, how galaxies and stars evolve, and the possibility of life beyond Earth. Every new discovery expands our knowledge of the incredible and ever-changing cosmos.
