The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 21, Post #5
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 21:28-32
Today we learn the rules about animals killing people, but today's reading only covers what happens if an ox gores people as well as the conditions and common sense of circumstances. The owner is not responsible if his ox gores a person to death. But...
If the ox is known for goring humans, then the owner will be put to death as well. He was warned!
If a servant is killed in the same way, the owner of the ox must pay the master 30 shekels of silver.
Either way, an ox who gores someone and kills them must be stoned and the meat cannot be eaten.
In the case of the owner and his death sentence, there is a provision to stay the execution of the owner. It is called a "ransom" which is a price for his life. The price that is paid for a 'slave' is 30 pieces of silver, the same price Yeshua (Salvation, aka Jesus) was sold for and he died in order to ransom us from the penalty for our sins. It is interesting that this was all laid out in the Torah before He fulfilled it.
Commandment Count
Our General commandment count goes up to 29.
And our Strict list is at 60 commandments.
These counts will be a footnote as we go through this book and Leviticus.
And our Strict /detailed list is at 53 commandments.
Hebrew scholars have been counting the laws provided by the creator for centuries. I am pretty sure that my count will be off. But you and I are giving it the old college try.
Today's Reading
English
"When an ox gores a man or a woman to death, the ox shall be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten, but the owner of the ox shall not be liable. But if the ox has been accustomed to gore in the past, and its owner has been warned but has not kept it in, and it kills a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death. If a ransom is imposed on him, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatever is imposed on him. If it gores a man's son or daughter, he shall be dealt with according to this same rule. If the ox gores a slave, male or female, the owner shall give to their master thirty shekels' of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.
