Exodus 22:10-16

We left off last week with a neighbor taking care of someone's donkey. What if it is injured or dies? God will judge between the men and see if the neighbor had put his hand to his neighbor's property or not. Continuing from last week...

The man who was caring for the animal takes and oath and the owner of the animal has to accept it - no restitution. But if the animal is stolen from him, then he has to make restitution. If it is mauled by an animal, then there is no restitution. That is the law regarding a neighbor doing a favor for someone else.

Let's get into borrowing which is a common thing even in today's suburban neighborhoods. There were not very many power tools back then so the law again covers a borrowed animal. If someone borrow's something from his neighbor and it is injured or dies, if he was not with it, he pays restitution - if he was with it (caring for it well, I guess) then there is no restitution. If he rented it out, then the rent money goes to the owner of the animal.

I left the topic title in down below. It is strange the way "social justice" and its meaning have changed. God digs into the issue of the kids fooling around. The boyfriend is to blame for going to bed with the daughter. You sleep with her you marry her, and you must pay the price for her hand. If the father refuses to give her to the man who took her by deceit, then he still has to pay the price, but he gets no wife. Moral of the story, don't push a girl into doing something when nobody is looking. The father will make you pay.

These offenses are very specific and they cover all possibilities and the proper solutions to settle accounts.

"If a man gives to his neighbor a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep safe, and it dies or is injured or is driven away, without anyone seeing it,...

...an oath by YHVH shall be between them both to see whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor's property. The owner shall accept the oath, and he shall not make restitution, But if it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. If it is torn by beasts, let him bring it as evidence. He shall not make restitution for what has been torn.

"If a man borrows anything of his neighbor, and it is injured or dies, the owner not being with it, he shall make full restitution. If the owner was with it, he shall not make restitution; if it was hired, it came for its hiring fee."

"If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife. If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money equal to the bride-price for virgins."
