Something lies beneath the foliage.
Something lies beneath the foliage.
"Look to the root"—so goes the famous aphorism urging us not to seek solutions on the surface, but to strive to see beyond what is immediately visible.
If you have ever planted potatoes, you know the importance of what lies hidden from view; while the green tops may be pleasing to the eye, they serve no real purpose.
After all, no one has yet invented an optical device—like a telescope for viewing distant horizons—that would allow us to see the fruits of our labor underground before we pick up a shovel and expend the energy to dig up ten buckets of potatoes after having planted nine.
People say animals are masters at staying out of sight, but if they were to compete in a game of hide-and-seek, they would lose to a vegetable: the potato would beat them all.
It would be nice to check on the potatoes and, if the result wasn't satisfactory, simply cover them back up with soil and let them grow a bit longer—but a potato isn't a page in an album that you can flip back and forth at will.
