Winter is Coming!

This morning, there was snow on the top of the mountains across the bay from us, for the first time this season.

Although it didn't get super cold overnight, it did rain a fair bit, and it was cold enough that snow fell above 5,000 feet (1500m).

I like winter! But then again I have to admit that I like all seasons for their own unique reasons. I actually don't have a "favorite" season...

I would say that one of the primary reasons I really like winter is the fact that we live in the north and the days become very short, the weather outside generally miserable, and I really enjoy many indoor activities and hobbies.

Unlike my parents — who used to huddle in the corner shivering every time winter came along and started looking at travel brochures to Tropical venues — I actually prefer to feel cold/cool air as opposed to swelteringly hot and humid air. That's not to say that I enjoy freezing or anything like that I just don't like hot weather.

I expect the 20+ years I spent living in Texas didn't improve my tolerance. Perhaps I "got used to it," but that doesn't mean the same thing as liking it.

Having grown up to be both an avid reader as well as a bit of a nerd, I've never had any problem entertaining myself indoors.

Heck, I still remember doing jigsaw puzzles as a kid and I still love doing jigsaw puzzles as an adult. It is endless entertainment that actually manages to keep my busy brain focus on one thing and stay relatively quiet.

While seeing the snow on the mountains was nice, I can't say I am looking forward to our inevitable heating bills for the winter, given how much the price of diesel and other fuels have risen this year.

I'm honestly not sure how I am going to fund those bills... aside from the logical step of turning down the thermostat and putting on another sweater!

I worry a good bit about this world, and the direction in which it is heading. More and more people — at least here in the USA — are no longer abl to afford their lives, even while working full-time. And "job security" has pretty much become a thing of the past, as more and more people see their jobs being replaced by automation.

I suppose all we can really do is take things one day at a time!

At least I am grateful for the fact that I am self-employed and can't be "fired!"

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week ahead!
