Life of Uncertainty

in WORLD OF XPILAR • 11 hours ago

There are absolutely no guarantees in life. Along with that comes a more general statement that nothing is certain.

I say that because I wanted to write a post this evening but I was having trouble getting pretty much any front end of steam it to load appropriately when I sat down to write.

It made me think about how I have been watching quite a few technology issues unfold in the last couple of weeks. Even today while at the supermarket I noticed that three of the self-checkout counters were closed would the red re-initializing message hanging forever on their screens.

Here at home, Mrs. Denmarkguy — who is our in-house website manager and web page developer — has been struggling to keep up with the technology because our web host apparently has introduced a bunch of new upgrades that have messed up things for pretty much everyone.

Which, in turn, made me think about the cyber attacks in in Europe that shut down the freezers and refrigeration warehouses at a number of supermarkets.

We seem to be becoming increasingly dependent on technologies that are supposed to help us and make life easier, and yet they seem to be making life more difficult are also quite time consuming. Who even wants to deal with that?

One of the online marketplaces I use to sell stuff to make money it's giving me all sorts of trouble because their automatic system doesn't understand how to detect identical banking information but the bank changed as a result of merging with another bank. Nothing has actually changed accept the name and that's causing a problem.

As far as I know the only way to make sure that something you want to keep safe from hackers is really keeping safe is to air gap those things from hacker access.

That's enough, at least for the moment although I'm sure we'll eventually arrive at a future where the mere fact that something is not connected to the web and is not driven by a motherboard will not be enough to protect it.

Hopefully I will be dead and gone by then!

For now, however, I'm going to post this somewhat abbreviated post because I'm not certain that it's going to go through so I'm not entirely interested in dedicating a lot of effort to it if it's just going to head out into empty space.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your week.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.

These oh-so-perfect solutions for our everyday lives not only bring a host of unnecessary problems that make everything much more complicated than it would be without them... They also consume endless resources and money, constantly guzzle energy at the highest levels, and require server capacity that contributes to even more global warming and the depletion of cooling water. Brave New World!
