The Manufacturer
The car was developed and built by BMW as part of the BMW i project, dedicated to sustainable mobility—electric mobility, so to speak. Production took place at the BMW plant in Leipzig, Germany, one of the group's most innovative facilities.
History
The BMW i8 is based on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car, presented in 2009.
The goal was to demonstrate that a sports car could offer high performance while reducing fuel consumption and emissions, and for its time, it represented a major step forward in the spread of electrified sports cars.
Designers and Engineers
The exterior design is the work of the BMW team led by Benoit Jacob, head of the BMW i project.
The car's engineering focused on reducing weight through the extensive use of carbon fiber (CFRP), aluminum, and composite materials. In short, innovation and technology were an integral part of this car.

Between 2014 and 2020, approximately 20,500 BMW i8s were built, including the Coupé and Roadster versions.
For several years, it was the world's best-selling plug-in hybrid sports car, demonstrating remarkable commercial success in a niche segment. This was almost a surprise.

It featured a 231 hp 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor, for a total power output of up to 374 hp in the updated version.
It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 4.4 seconds, reaching an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
Its iconic scissor-opening doors and carbon fiber chassis made it one of the most technologically advanced vehicles of its time.

Produzione e vendite
Tra il 2014 e il 2020 sono state costruite circa 20.500 BMW i8 tra versione Coupé e Roadster.
Per diversi anni è stata la sportiva ibrida plug-in più venduta al mondo, dimostrando un notevole successo commerciale in un segmento di nicchia. Questo fu quasi una sorpresa.
Importanza storica
La BMW i8 è considerata una delle auto che hanno anticipato il futuro delle supercar ibride.
Montava un motore 1.5 tre cilindri turbo da 231 CV abbinato a un motore elettrico, per una potenza complessiva fino a 374 CV nella versione aggiornata.
Accelerava da 0 a 100 km/h in circa 4,4 secondi, raggiungendo una velocità massima limitata elettronicamente a 250 km/h.
Le iconiche porte ad apertura verticale (detta apertura a forbice) e il telaio in fibra di carbonio la resero una delle vetture tecnologicamente più avanzate del suo periodo.
Conclusioni
La BMW i8 ha dimostrato che prestazioni, innovazione e sostenibilità possono convivere nella stessa automobile. Ancora oggi il suo design sembra provenire dal futuro e continua ad attirare l'attenzione ovunque venga esposta. È una vettura che ha segnato una svolta nella storia dell'automobile moderna, aprendo la strada alle sportive ibride ad alte prestazioni e destinata a rimanere un'icona del XXI secolo.
