The Exquisite Corpse #8: Knock Twice for the Baton

Exquisite Corpse Reloaded

Seven editions in, the tradition keeps growing. Last round gave us two stories born from a borrowed paragraph by Mary Shelley, one of them ending with a kitchen full of appliances in midlife crisis and the other with a rescue operation that someone tipped off. To everyone who wrote blind and passed the baton on: thank you. And special thanks to @beckymia and @leorichies, who took the baton twice in Edition #7. This game exists because you keep playing it.

The opening of Edition #8 is a surprise.
It might be a text of my own, or a fragment from the work of a well-known author. You'll find out when you receive your baton.

A change in how you request your baton

An experienced player pointed out that the old way of asking for the three words was not clear enough. Fair point. So from this edition on, the baton has two doors, and you use both:

  1. Comment on this post asking for your baton ("baton please" is enough).
  2. Send me a private message through any of the contacts listed at the bottom of this post.

The comment leaves a public record that you are in the game. The private message makes sure your request reaches me whatever platform you prefer. Your three words will reach you privately.

How it works

Think of it as a relay race: to start your turn, you need to receive the baton. Nobody can begin a new fragment until someone hands them the last three words of the story. Where the baton goes, and what becomes of it, is up to chance. 🎲

🏃 Request your baton every time you want a turn: comment on this post and send a private message to the organizer. You will receive, privately, only the last three words of the text you need to continue.
✍️ Write your paragraph blind. No context, no safety net, just three words and your imagination.
📤 Send it back to the organizer once it is ready.
🔁 Want to run again? Perfectly fine, but you'll need a new baton before your next turn, requested the same way.
🧩 The organizer will stitch the pieces together as they come in, in the order received. The full story won't be visible to anyone, including you, until it's assembled and published.

If the story splits into two, or into something nobody saw coming, that's not a bug. That's the 1925 experience working as intended.

The rules

🗓️ Starts: every Sunday
🏁 Closes: every Saturday, 23:45 GMT
🌐 Language: English (translate with whatever tool you trust if you don't write in it)
📏 Length: no minimum, no maximum
👥 Number of participants: unlimited
🧠 Your only job is to write something that could plausibly follow three words. Coherence with the rest of the story is not your problem. It's ours.
🤖 Bots, multi-accounts, and AI-generated entries: still not welcome, still subject to being flagged and muted unless legitimacy is demonstrated.

Rewards

50% of the liquid Steem rewards earned by the weekly post goes to the participating authors.
25% goes to the community and special beneficiaries.
25% goes to the organizer.

The 500 SP delegation from our dear @weisser-rabe for participants who meet the criteria remains in place. Once a month per person. Resources are as limited as life itself.

Proof of participation

📝 Your baton request comment on this post is also your proof of participation: that is how our bot confirms who played and where to send the payout. Please don't reveal your contribution to the story in it. If you already have your baton and forgot to comment, leave any comment now: a single word, an emoji, "here," anything you like. No comment, no reward, even if you sent your paragraph to the organizer. (That's a joke, there are always options for sending prizes; after all, this is Blockchain. But we'd appreciate the comment, suggestion, idea, or complaint so our bot can do its job!)

One more thing

The pilot is still evolving, and it keeps getting better because people play it, break it, and tell us what to fix. So keep breaking it, and keep telling us when something is unclear.

Thank you @ladyaryastark for putting this together and for coordinating! It is not easy and am sorry you have to deal with criticisms. We need to all remind ourselves that this is in the name of fun and experiment. Don't need to get all too serious about it I feel.

You're right! This is for us to have fun together; it'll never be perfect, and I'm not looking for that either because it would be boring! Thanks for the support! I love the GIF 😊

It is what it is, and things are going as they are... ;-)) And it’s lovely that things are still moving forward! I’m looking forward to everything.

Although there will surely be some new criticisms, we must move forward, as Don Quixote said.

And I must clarify that I don't mind criticism, I mind the people who "visit" you looking for something to criticize, and not in the best way.

That said, I want to ask all our members if they want a new host for the game. You can say it publicly or privately to @weisser-rabe.

Thank you all for everything!

Oops. I didn’t realise there were conflicts you’d had to deal with. I’m sorry; I’m usually there to ‘step in’ in situations like that ;-))

Anyway: I can only speak for myself (and a bit for Ty-ty, as we chat about these things...) - You’re doing a brilliant job! As long as it doesn’t become too much for you (which I’d totally understand) or you lose the enthusiasm for it, you’re the only host I can imagine for this contest...

I appreciate your support and trust, and also @ty-ty and everyone else who thinks things are going well. However, it's clear that not everyone agrees, and that's why I'd like the community to share their opinions. My goal is to collaborate, but if I upset important members of Steemit, the community could suffer the consequences. That's all, the common good is more important than my own ego. 😉 (I hope this emoticon doesn't bother you.)

Hey @ladyaryastark,
thank you for using our automatic payout bot 'DUBby' to share your post rewards with your commentators.

You have not yet issued any payout instructions.
Just write a comment to the users who should receive a share. It should contain the instruction in the form !dubby x %.

If you need help with this, feel free to ask or check this manual (german).

Greetings from the 'DU-Finanzbot' (by Witness @moecki).

I appreciate your attitude and have no problem with a smiling moon face ;-)) What I don’t understand (or want to understand) is: what do you mean by a ‘prominent Steemit member’? Has anyone from the Steemit team attacked you?

I consider all members of the platform to be equally important or equally unimportant. A system like this only works as a whole. Because this isn’t always handled consistently on Steem, it’s increasingly finding itself in a precarious position... If the only ones who matter are those with wealth and stakes, and the rest are just functional or insignificant extras, then this is no longer a progressive idea in the sense of a world that could be decentralised. Then we’ve lost out to selfishness and greed.

Thanks a lot for your support 😊

Okay... Nobody is knocking here. I will make a beginning: I'm ready for three words... ;-))

I'd give it roughly an 80-85% probability of having been generated with AI.

What gives it away:

  • "Concrete fact + advice" structure: it opens with an observation ("How curious that..."), moves on to "The concrete fact:" and closes with "Watch out for this...". This is a very typical template for comments generated to "add value."
  • Mentioning users as evidence: it cites @beckymia and @leorichies as verifiable data points, something comment bots do to appear informed about the post's context.
  • Generic closing suggestion: the advice about revealing the author of the opening text sounds useful, but it's an idea that could apply to any similar game, with no personal opinion behind it.
  • Voseo with no real orality: "querés" and "revelás" appear consistently and correctly, but the text has no imperfections, filler words, or personal anecdotes. It's too clean for a spontaneous comment.
  • Zero personal experience: it never says "I participated," "it happened to me," or "in my case." It only observes from the outside.
  • Consultant tone: it analyzes the game's mechanics as if it were a process evaluation ("bureaucracy," "public record and private delivery").

What gives some room for doubt: the use of Rioplatense voseo is more specific than what usually comes out by default, and the comment does respond to a concrete detail in the post. But a prompt with style instructions easily explains that.

It also helps that the account has a default avatar, and that the comment arrived 37 minutes ago. If you want a more solid verification, check @josevillanueva's history: if they publish comments of similar length and structure across many different posts in a short time, that weighs more than any analysis of the text itself.
