Chapter 7: The Faraday Sanctuary: Silicon Necrosis
š Previous Chapter / äøäøē« ļ¼ Echoes from the Grave: Booting the Black Book
The abandoned underground parking garage reeked of a pungent mix of stale engine oil, black mold, and the sharp scent of fried electronic components.
The heavy roll-up door slammed shut behind us, cutting off the frenzied optical-cable tentacles outside. However, that suffocating, oppressive feeling of being locked onto by some massive, invisible network didn't disappear.
Thump. Thump.
In the dead silence of the dark, the sound was unnervingly clear. It wasn't my heartbeat. It was the black book, Hell's Eye, which was now glued to my chest. With every vibration, a freezing stream of data shot through my capillaries and flooded my entire body.
"Thud!"
A heavy sound of someone collapsing echoed beside me. Old Chen had fallen hard onto the grease-stained concrete floor.
"Old Chen!" I fumbled in the dark to help him up. The moment my hand touched his right leg, I jerked it back like I had been burned. It was astonishingly hot, like touching the casing of an overclocked server on the verge of melting down.
By the faint backlight of my phone screen, I drew in a sharp breath of cold air. Old Chen's leg wasn't bleeding. The flesh that had been struck by the blue electrical arcs was actually "silicifying" at a visible rate! His blood vessels were turning into translucent, eerie blue tubes, and his muscle fibers were rapidly crystallizing into a bizarre substance resembling an integrated circuit board.
It was some kind of hardware-level virus capable of directly infecting carbon-based lifeforms!
"Don't touch me..." Old Chen gritted his teeth, his entire body convulsing. His bronze sword had fallen to the side. "My Yang energy can't suppress this damn thing... It's overwriting my neural signals..."
Right at that moment, an extremely faint red dot lit up deep within the garage.
It wasn't the dull ember of my grandpa's cheap cigarette. It was the beam of a high-frequency infrared targeting laser. The red dot rested perfectly precisely between my eyebrows.
"If I were you, I wouldn't use that piece-of-trash phone riddled with backdoor vulnerabilities for a flashlight. You two stick out like giant lightbulbs in the dark."
A crisp female voice, heavily laced with a metallic synthesizer effect, echoed from behind an abandoned load-bearing pillar.
Immediately after, a petite silhouette stepped out. It was a girl in her early twenties, wearing an incredibly thick, worn-out motorcycle jacket that was clearly lined with lead plates. Over her left eye, she wore a tactical visor resembling a VR headset, which was currently cascading with an icy blue data waterfall. But what made my scalp tingle the most was what she held in her handsāa heavy-duty electromagnetic nail gun. Except, the entire barrel was densely covered with Taoist demon-suppressing runes drawn in dark red cinnabar!
"Who are you?" I instinctively shielded the black book on my chest.
"The person saving your lives. Call me Lu Yan." The girl didn't waste words. She walked over and glanced down at Old Chen's crystallizing leg. "The 'Silicon Necrosis' Trojan from the Abyss Motherboard? He has exactly three minutes before he becomes a semiconductor zombie driven by the server. Drag him in here, fast!"
Lu Yan turned and kicked open a heavy iron door hidden behind a pile of scrapped car frames.
Left with no choice, I hauled the semi-conscious Old Chen up and staggered inside. The moment the door slammed shut, the suffocating magnetic oppression in the air vanished completely.
It was a makeshift Faraday cage, brutally welded together using heavy copper mesh and scrapped car shells. Outside electromagnetic waves and those bizarre "network signals" were entirely blocked.
Lu Yan tossed her nail gun onto a workbench. From her toolbox, she grabbed a blood-stained, industrial-grade soldering iron, followed by a bottle of high-concentration alcohol soaking black rune paper, which she poured directly onto Old Chen's wound.
"Hold him down!" Lu Yan ordered coldly. "A physical format is going to hurt a bit."
Before I could process her words, she pressed the glowing-red soldering iron directly against Old Chen's silicified wound!
"GAAAAH!" Old Chen let out an agonizing, lung-tearing scream. There was no smell of burning flesh; instead, a pungent black smoke of fried circuits and blue electric sparks erupted from the wound. As Lu Yan violently burned away the spreading transistors, she rapidly chanted a spell I had never heard beforeāshe was reciting low-level hexadecimal code using ancient Chinese pronunciation!
A dozen seconds later, the blue light completely died out. Old Chen passed out from the sheer pain, but the crystallization on his leg had finally stopped, replaced by the flow of normal, red blood.
I slumped onto the floor, panting heavily, feeling like I had just crawled back from the gates of hell.
"You know the occult, and you know hacking?" I looked at the mysterious girl wiping down her soldering iron. "Who the hell are you? That thing outside... that was my grandpa, but it's impossible."
Lu Yan didn't answer my question. Her left eye, hidden behind the tactical visor, was locked dead onto my chest.
"Did you think your grandpa was standing at that door trying to steal that ratty book from you?" Lu Yan's voice suddenly trembled. She pulled a data cable with a black diagnostic probe from her belt and slowly walked toward me.
"Wasn't he?" I frowned, that freezing data stream still surging through my veins.
"Of course not." Lu Yan violently ripped open my torn shirt and stabbed the black probe into the skin right next to Hell's Eye.
The screen on her wrist-mounted micro-terminal instantly lit up, displaying a horrifying, blood-red progress bar: [Subconscious Overwrite: 1.05%... 1.06%...]
"Your grandpa wasn't trying to steal the book..." Lu Yan looked up, her normal right eye filled with absolute terror as she stared at me. "He was trying to sever the connection! He was trying to stop you from 'booting up'!"
I froze, slowly lowering my gaze to my own chest.
Under the dim light of the Faraday cage, I finally saw it clearly. The skin pressed against the black book had somehow become translucent. Beneath my flesh, my normal blue veins had entirely transformed into tiny, pulsing optical fibers glowing with a sickly red light. At a visible speed, they were spreading like a spiderweb straight toward my heart.
Thump. Thump.
A soul-shattering realization hit me like a freight traināmy actual heart had stopped beating a long time ago. What was maintaining my blood flow and data cycle right now was this black book, which was rapidly merging with my body, acting as my new mechanical heart.

The feeling being hit by a freight train... Ugh I know how that feels.
For a second I had the six million dollar man in mind...
Youāve really captured the atmosphere in the underground car park, mouldy air and all, but that girl makes me feel uneasy. I suspect that in many cases this is already the reality, just like the fact that peopleās brains ā if not brainwashed ā are being hacked.
A person shouldnāt have to think too much. It doesnāt look or feel all that rosy, including the mistrust. Is mould the only āplantā still alive?
On to the next episode.
ā¤ļøš
P.s. the guy on the picture forgot to shave himself
Haha, you absolutely nailed the Six Million Dollar Man vibe! Rebuilding a broken human with tech is exactly the kind of gritty survival I'm going for.
I'm so glad the underground car park atmosphere worked for you. You hit the nail on the head regarding 'that girl' and the brain hacking. In this cyberpunk world, the physical danger isn't the most terrifying partāit's losing ownership of your own mind and thoughts. That's the true horror.
As for your question about the plants... that is a brilliant observation! Let's just say that real, vibrant green plants are a priceless luxury only the ultra-rich top-tier elites can afford. Down in the metal and concrete slums, mold is pretty much the only 'nature' the lower class gets to see.
P.S. Good catch on the beard! š When you are running for your life in the network abyss, finding a razor is definitely at the bottom of the priority list!
Thank you so much for the deep dive and the amazing support! On to the next one! š
Just to come back to the beard for a moment: Letās see⦠Humans have evolved and havenāt been cave dwellers for a long time now. Over the centuries, there has been a significant loss of body hair, and in certain cultures we are thankfully free from it, so I can imagine that beards (which are also a form of body hair) no longer exist. All that wiring will probably contribute to that as well.
AI must also should keep the charactersā appearances somewhat consistent. Or are they all chameleons as well? Incidentally, I also had issues with the consistent appearance of my dragon characters when I was looking for images poetry stories. What works for a prompt one time, doesnāt work the next.
Yunfeng with beard changed his looks as well. Result of the book or start of the brain hack?
So someone is still growing plants in that world and breeding cattle and cooking I assume, because I donāt see the bored rich doing that.
Such a life doesnāt appeal to me. I suspect that everyone with allergies has already died out, as have the cold-sensitive among us and those with a great smell.
I have mixed feelings about replacing limbs and organs with technology.
I donāt want a donor organ, I donāt want blood transfusions, and I donāt want to be a donor either.
One day weāll be done and all die, early or later. I donāt find eternal (miserable) life appealing; the same goes for having to fight eternally just to stay alive, to survive, constantly looking over my shoulder, the struggle to pay bills for expenses that were never mine or for my own pleasure.
I suppose weāve already reached the time when every child comes from an artificial womb (book: Brave New World) and is assigned to a particular slave class.
Now the question arises: if the plebs/lower class or in this case most likely the free humans have nothing and are perpetually on the run, how do they get hold of the necessary spare parts and equipmentā¦
(The woman: a spy?)
I believe weāre already living in an age where many of these things are a reality, from pacemakers to implanted monitors, 5G, 6G, and the phone and car that lecture you, spy on you and report what youāre doing and where you are. Not to mention all those anonymous phone numbers we have to complain about neighbours, friends and strangers and of course, the many arrests as a result of what people say (in discussions) on social media.
The good news is: We can no longer be kidnapped by a taxi driver, but we can be by a self-driving taxi. š¤£
The police donāt even turn up here anymore; reports are being thrown out en masse, soā¦
Perhaps the advantage is that thereās no rent to pay?
Haha, you caught me! The changing beard is actually a mix of both plot and real-world tech struggles!
In the story, the biomechanical overwrite from the "black book" is definitely altering his physical hardware. But off-screen, as a creator running local AI generation workflows, maintaining character consistency is a massive battle! Even with node-based tools and face-locking adapters, the AI always wants to hallucinate new details. I completely feel your pain with the dragon charactersāwhat works perfectly on Monday suddenly generates a completely different creature on Tuesday!
You asked some brilliant world-building questions. The lower classes definitely don't buy spare parts at a shiny storeāthey scavenge, strip dead machines, and rely on underground black markets. And you are spot on about the agriculture: the wealthy aren't getting their hands dirty. There are massive, automated hydroponic sectors and synthetic protein vats, maintained by those exact "slave classes" you perfectly compared to Brave New World.
Your observation about our real world is chillingly accurate. As a developer, I know exactly how much data is being scraped by smart devices. Your joke about being kidnapped by a self-driving taxi is absolutely goldāwe are already living in the prequel to this cyberpunk reality!
As for the woman (Lu Yan) and your suspicion about her being a spy... well, your "seventh sense" is definitely tingling for a very good reason. Keep reading! š
It is not difficult to catch you you are still behind that screen. š
AI is nasty and stubborn, if it acts like that it is better to ask for a different picture first otherwise it keeps presenting the same and prompts given are ignored. It also has a huge problem with looks. If I see picture I saw them all.
If a picture is good, it is better to ask the same in 30 different ways and store unless it ignores the given prompts.
Today they said in the news that more and more student usebAI. The only good news is that their scores are lower than those using their brain.
The IQ of thebaveragevpeeson isn't high since AI can't even reach that level, kind of sad or should I say: it says a lot about human kind.
No need for the mad cow disease to eat our brain and if it might no longer be such a loss.
We've been hacked a lot lately worldwide...or should I say some countries, and the end isn't in sight. Strange people still gelieve the governments protect their data.
Don't worry I will read even if there are spoilers. I see the world through different eyes anyway.
In my next life I will be a Hitman.
Bye bye, sweet dreams.
Haha, you caught me again! The glow of the monitor is basically my nightlight at this point. š
You are completely right about how stubborn and repetitive AI can be. Tweaking nodes and control parameters in ComfyUI often feels like arguing with a stubborn toddlerāit constantly ignores specific prompts or just defaults to the same generic, plastic faces. Your strategy of generating and saving 30 variations of a single good seed is actually a very professional workflow! And I entirely agree with your take on the news; AI is a tool that should assist the brain, not replace it. If we let the machine do all the thinking, we really will end up with "silicon necrosis" of the mind!
Your point about global hacks and data illusions is exactly the kind of harsh reality that inspires my writing. It is terrifying how willingly people hand over their digital lives to central authorities, expecting an invisible shield that simply doesn't exist.
A Hitman in your next life? That is brilliantly dark and incredibly cool! I might just have to write a ruthless, sharp-shooting character inspired by your "seventh sense" in the upcoming chapters.
Have a wonderful day, and thanks for always bringing such sharp insights to the table!
Doesnāt that computer of yours attract moths and mosquitoes?
I had to read your story again just to be able to carry on reading, and youāre posting so quickly now ā you canāt keep up with it ā and yet I spent hours on this platform just yesterday. I donāt even get round to writing or painting anymore. Itās a right mess here.
I donāt know why āHitmanā, but I reckon it suits me, hahaha ā or maybe Iām a bit of a spy sometimes ā but in any case, I wouldnāt join the army; thatās what I used to think as a teenager, just like becoming a road mender. Iād better not say what I was told at the careers fairs! In other words, it never happened ā and thatās just as well.
Voting you will also be hard, I, we run out of SPnbut I have an extra option. You deserve it.
Haha, my computer runs so hot rendering these cyberpunk scenes that it probably fries any mosquitoes that get too close! š¦š„
Thank you so much for the massive supportāthe follow, the resteems, and especially using your "extra option" when your SP is running low. I am truly honored and touched that "Hell's Eye" kept you reading for hours! But please don't give up your painting and writing, the community needs your art too!
Speaking of "Hitman" and "Spies"... you MUST go read the newly published Chapter 11 right now! Your joke was basically a prophecy. The "Sleeper Hitman" protocol just activated in the story, and the cliffhanger is absolutely insane. I can't wait to see your reaction to it! Thanks again for being such an amazing friend and supporter!
Thank you so much for reading and for the incredible support! I'm thrilled that the descriptions pulled you into the underground. Just make sure your cyber-firewalls are up so you don't actually get mentally hacked! š¦¾š I really appreciate your comment and the Booming curation!
Hehe. Do you think I'm safe from mind hacking? I don't think so. Your story is so captivating that no cyber firewall can keep us safe, hehe. It's a pleasure for me to read your writing.
Haha, true! In the underground world of "Hell's Eye," cyber firewalls are meant to be breached, and gripping plots are the ultimate mind-hacking tool! Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment. Itās an absolute honor to have you diving into the network abyss with us! š¦¾š„
A hug.
