A sharp whine split the dead air. The vibro-blade was coming. Lu Yan didn't even blink. No hesitation. No internal battle. The combat core owned her nervous system now, redlining every cybernetic implant in her body way past the safety specs. I actually heard the wet, sickening pop of synthetic muscle fibers tearing under the extreme torque. She didn't flinch. My partner was gone. All that was left was a termination protocol wrapped in skin.

I threw my weight hard to the left. The blade bit into the metal deck exactly where my throat used to be a millisecond ago, kicking up a blinding spray of orange sparks. My limbs felt like dead weight, completely flooded with lead from the neural formatting backlash.

"Lu Yan! Wake up!" I yelled, desperately scrambling backward on the floor.

Her eyes—just dead, crimson lenses now—locked right onto my thermal heat. "Verbal override denied," came the flat, mechanical reply. Then she lunged. A flawless, inescapable strike aimed right for the center of my chest.

I shut my eyes. Braced for the cold steel.

CLANG.

A massive shockwave of grinding metal tore through the collapsing room. But... no pain. Nothing pierced my chest. I opened my eyes. Froze solid.

The "real" Old Chen stood right over me. He didn't dodge it. Didn't pull a gun. He just... caught Lu Yan’s high-frequency blade. With his bare left hand.

The insane vibration was chewing through the wrinkled skin and fake flesh of his palm, but there wasn't a single drop of blood. Just sparks. Underneath the shredded tissue? A pitch-black skeletal structure made of some kind of hyper-alloy. This wasn't some off-the-shelf street cyberware. It was complex, military-grade architecture, pulsing with a dark energy that seemed to suck the light out of the room.

For the first time, a twitch broke Lu Yan's blank expression. Her combat core was obviously crashing trying to calculate this impossible physical resistance.

"That's enough, Unit 73," Old Chen said. The shaky, old-man tremble? Gone entirely. His voice was smooth now. Heavy. Absolute.

Before Lu Yan could even try to pull the blade back, Chen just flicked his wrist. Raw kinetic force slammed into her, tossing her backward like a ragdoll. She hit the dying, pulsating 'flesh-ball' hub with a sickening thud.

"Neural fluid is breaching. Unless you want your brain liquefied in about two minutes, we need to leave," Old Chen remarked. He sounded like he was commenting on the weather. His good hand clamped onto my collar, yanking me to my feet with terrifying, effortless power.

Above us, the colossal inverted flesh-ball finally gave out. It ruptured, dumping a glowing green tsunami of corrosive neural acid all over the hall. Alarms screamed their final death rattle. Old Chen kicked a heavy maintenance hatch wide open—I hadn't even seen it there—and dragged me into a pitch-black ventilation shaft. Half a second later, acid flooded the deck we just left.

Down we went. Sliding through a steep, winding pipe in absolute suffocating darkness while the facility roared and collapsed somewhere above us. Finally, we hit the grated floor of a sub-level transit tunnel hard. I lay there, gasping, my lungs absolutely on fire.

In the dim flicker of the emergency lights, I stared across at the old man. Tiny nano-bots in his shredded hand were already hard at work, weaving fresh synthetic skin right back over the black alloy. Flawless repair.

So much for memory loss. So much for Alzheimer's.

"What... what the hell are you?" I croaked. I gripped my pulse pistol tight, even knowing it wouldn't do a damn thing.

Old Chen looked up at me. That kindly, confused grandpa smile? Completely gone. Replaced by a gaze so sharp and calculated it chilled my blood. He took a second to slowly adjust his collar, flicking a piece of dust off his jacket.

"I suppose we're done with the disguise," he murmured. A faint, golden geometric pattern started to glow deep in his eyes. "To answer your question, Yun Feng... I'm the guy who wrote her sleeper protocol. Twenty years ago. You’ve done great surviving the tutorial, kid. But the real game? That starts right now."

So things are going to get more exciting from now on! You didn’t need to add ‘The Chinese version’ underneath it for my sake, mind you. Incidentally, it’s interesting to see that the odd bits of translation in English aren’t there when I translate the Chinese into another language, such as Dutch.

So Old Chen isn’t actually old.

Before Lu Yan could even try to pull the blade back, Chen just flicked his wrist.

I wonder why the translation came up with his wrist.

Haha, you read with the eyes of a true detective, @wakeupkitty.pal!

You are absolutely right about "Old Chen". In Chinese culture, adding "Old" (老 - Lǎo) before a surname doesn't always mean the person is biologically old. It is often a nickname used among close associates to show familiarity, experience, or seniority in the field.

As for the "his wrist" translation quirk, that's a fascinating linguistic difference! Chinese is a language that often drops pronouns. In the original text, it probably just says "Chen flicked [the] wrist." Because English grammar strictly requires a possessive pronoun there, the translation tool automatically forces a "his" into the sentence. When you translate directly to Dutch, the AI engine might process that missing pronoun differently!

It's incredibly fun to discuss these cultural and linguistic nuances with you. Brace yourself, the real action in the cyberpunk world is just beginning!

I believe you should translate old Chen into Master Cen, which would be better. If you use Senior Chen we expect a junior to show up.

I am prepared and still behind.
Do not despair.. I read you!

This BOOMING vote is yours and well deserved!

Wow, thank you so much for the generous BOOMING vote and the incredible feedback! ❤️🍀

You make a fantastic point about his name. In Chinese, "Lao Chen" (Old Chen) is often used as a casual term of endearment and respect for a veteran. But you are absolutely right—in English, "Master Chen" sounds so much more badass and fitting for a veteran warrior wielding a fusion blade! I love this suggestion and will definitely adapt his title to "Master Chen" for the English readers moving forward.

And please take all the time you need to read! There is absolutely no rush at all. I am just deeply honored that you are following Yun Feng and Master Chen's journey. 🦾🚀

I could use a nano bot to see some skin..

This BOOMING vote is yours and well deserved!
❤️🍀

Haha! Careful with those nano bots, my friend—in this city, half the skin they find might just be high-grade synthetic dermal plating anyway! 🦾😅

Thank you so much for the awesome BOOMING vote and for immersing yourself so deeply into this cyberpunk world. Your support keeps the neon lights burning! 🚀✨
