Irresistible Grace? What Eli's House Says
Someone told me, "The irresistible grace revealed in Scripture was simply the divine enablement bestowed upon chosen servants... The recipient could not resist the impartation of the gift. The gifts and the calling are irrevocable (Rom 11:29)."
Here's what the Scripture says.
God promised Eli, "I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever," but now, "Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed" (1 Samuel 2:30). The promise was real, and God withdrew it from Eli's house because they despised Him.
In the very chapter cited, branches were "broken off because of their unbelief" (Romans 11:20), standing branches are warned "otherwise you too will be cut off" (11:22), and the broken ones are grafted in again "if they do not continue in their unbelief" (11:23). Romans 11:29 is about Israel as a people (11:28), not a guarantee that no one can fall away.
God's gift is real. So is our freedom to despise it.
