Crypto & Money Basics #1: What Is STEEM and How It Earns You Money
If you have ever wondered how a social media post can turn into real money, you are in the right place. Welcome to the first part of Crypto & Money Basics, a series that explains money and crypto ideas in plain language — no jargon walls, no assumptions.
Today we start with the basics: STEEM, the cryptocurrency that powers the platform you are reading this on.
STEEM: the currency of this economy
STEEM is the native currency of the Steem blockchain. Think of it like the cash of the Steemit economy: it can be traded on crypto exchanges, sent to other users in seconds, and converted into the ecosystem's other tokens. Unlike Bitcoin, which mostly just sits in wallets, STEEM has a job — it keeps the whole reward economy moving. Every post payout, every vote, every community transaction runs on it.
Steem Power: your stake in the network
When you "power up" STEEM, it becomes Steem Power (SP). This is your influence: the more SP you hold, the more weight your votes carry. Voting with SP is called curating, and curators earn a share of the rewards pool — so your stake literally pays you for finding good content. Powered-up STEEM also gives you more Resource Credits, the "fuel" every account spends to post, vote and comment.
For beginners, the lesson is simple: powered-up STEEM works for you; liquid STEEM sitting in your wallet just waits.
Steem Dollars: the steady one
The third token is Steem Dollars (SBD), designed to hold roughly the value of one US dollar. While STEEM's price swings with the market, SBD is the calm corner of the ecosystem — handy for cashing out without watching charts, or for parking value while you learn the ropes.
How people actually earn
There are three honest ways people earn here:
- Posting — publish content people value, and their votes send author rewards to you.
- Curating — vote early on posts that later do well, and earn curation rewards.
- Delegating — lend your Steem Power to others and share in the rewards they help generate.
Notice what is NOT on the list: shortcuts, bots that promise instant riches, and anything that asks for your keys. In crypto, as in regular money, if something promises profits without effort, it is usually a trap.
One habit to start today
If this is your first week here, start with the smallest honest step: read, comment thoughtfully, and vote for posts you genuinely like. Rewards follow participation — the system simply measures what the community values.
Next time in Crypto & Money Basics, we will break down how rewards are actually calculated and split between authors and curators. See you in part two.
