Why I Almost Signed With the Wrong Agency (And What Stopped Me)

I was two conversations away from signing a twelve month contract with an agency that promised me first page rankings within a month. Looking back, I'm genuinely glad a friend talked me out of it.
The pitch was smooth. Impressive slides, confident promises, a case study slide with a client logo I recognized. But when I actually asked how they'd achieve that specific ranking that fast, the answer got vague quickly. "Proven techniques" was about as specific as it got.
My friend, who runs a small agency herself, asked me one question that changed everything: "Did they ask you anything about your actual customers, or did they just pitch you their package?" I realized they hadn't asked much at all.
I ended up going with a smaller agency that spent almost the entire first call asking questions, about my customers, my competitors, what had and hadn't worked before. Their timeline was less exciting, months instead of weeks, but it was honest.
Looking back, the biggest lesson wasn't about marketing tactics at all. It was that a sales pitch heavy on promises and light on questions is usually hiding something, even when the slides look great.
