The Story of Jai Keng (strong heart)

in #dogs • 28 days ago

We get a lot of badly neglected and abused animal cases here in Krabi Animal Welfare and we care a lot about all of our dogs and cats. Yet, there are some stories that stick out more than others and we would make some sort of heart-wrenching Insta about it if we knew how to do that and had the time and patience to edit anything. But since we do not have either of those things, perhaps I can tell you about the wonderful story of the newly named "Jai Keng" which means "strong heart" in Thai.

Jai Keng wasn't abandoned or neglected like you would typically presume was the case in Thailand. The dog had a caring owner who passed away and it was the friends, family, and neighbors of Jai Keng that didn't do enough and before you know it Jai Keng was all roughed up and living on the streets.

after a fight or getting hit by a vehicle, Jai Keng suffered an ear wound that became badly infected because it was not treated by anyone. It is saddening to me that people would simply walk past this injured dog, especially if they knew the dog's owner while she was alive.

When we were notified we didn't know what to expect, but it was tragic indeed once we learned the story. When a neighbor was explaining the situation via a translator I wanted to ask "why didn't you do anything before now" but I held my tongue. We took over the care of Jai Keng even though we do not have the space for her in our kennels. We make exceptions for exceptional cases such as this one.

We received zero pushback on the fact that we were not going to bring her back and while we love having Jai Keng, it is so sad to me that no one was willing to help the dog out in its own community. We transported and paid for all of her treatments and before long, she was really enjoying the human contact. You could tell that she was very much cared for before and this abandonment that the dog doesn't understand must have weighed very heavy on her.

It's such a great story because Jai Keng and her one ear didn't just recover but she behaves as though she has no idea it is missing. We go and visit her every now and then and she is so spoiled at her new home that she actually turns her nose up at chicken! We are able to coax her into eating it after a little while. She is just so nervous until she has decided to trust you but is so pleasant that this process doesn't normally take that long.

We are a bit disappointed in the community that she came from for not helping her earlier, especially because the area was one of relative affluence by Thai standards. However, what is done is done, and we are just happy that someone said something to us so that we could help. Jai Keng would have simply lived a life of sadness on the streets until her ear infection likely would have taken her life.

This story has a happy ending, but unfortunately for every win, there are dozens of losses.

Now Jai Keng is happy, healthy, and living a wonderful life with her new family.

Please adopt and rescue animals, don't buy them. There are at any given point in time hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats awaiting adoption. And to quote Bob Barker, please get your pet sterilized so that together we can tackle the global overpopulation problem together.
