Viral Madness

Morning has a funny way of making you reconsider things—mostly because waking up means leaving a perfectly good dream behind. The air felt unusually fresh, and I almost thought my neighbors had actually traveled like I overheard them planning the night before. That was until I saw them outside, wearing everything except traveling clothes.
"Good morning, sir," I greeted the old man who had decided to turn my doorstep into his personal beer parlor.
I stared at his massive belly, which looked like it was harboring at least triplets. It was as if he was actively praying for God to transfer the duties of childbirth to him. He ignored my greeting entirely, taking another long swigs from his bottle.
I didn't let it ruin my Saturday. I had just finished hanging my laundry on the line when a sudden crash shattered the quiet.
"Gboola!"
He had just smashed a bottle on the floor in a fit of drunkenness and immediately started sparring with the air. Between erratic kung-fu chops, he was loudly cursing his wife for not putting meat in his food two days ago. Passersby began to pause, watching the spectacle. He was playing out a live-action Nigerian version of Drunken Master, shouting "Hiaayyah!" while kicking his legs into the sky.
That was when I noticed his footwear: the classic "I Swear to the Heavens" shoes. Those shoes were old enough to be my grandfather; word on the street was he actually inherited them. Every time he kicked, his oversized belly danced like a seasoned professional.
"Won't someone lock this one in a psychiatric hospital?" a passerby muttered.
"Lock who?" another replied, laughing. "This man has been generating income for my TikTok for two months straight! He never fails to deliver."
"No lie!" a third joined in. "I saw your last video. The man deserves 'Best Madman of the Year.'"
Eventually, the man tired himself out and staggered back toward his house.
I sighed. It looked like my compound was on its way to social media stardom. The lazy man had clearly been scolded by his wife the night before, and as usual, his ego couldn't handle it. He had turned joblessness into a full-time profession, dumping every financial responsibility on his wife. She cared for him tirelessly, yet he continuously humiliated her, constantly boasting about his dead mother's house instead of fixing his life.
Speaking of "breadwinning," the only bread he won was from the local sports betting shop—which was probably how he funded his expensive beer habit. He was only thirty-five, but if he kept this up, he’d look seventy by the time he hit forty.
By evening, I was back in my room, comfortably reuniting with the angels in my dreams, when a sudden blast of sound woke me up like thunder.
It was him again, this time with a massive MP3 speaker. Farewell, dream angels.
"Ehhhhh!"
His booming voice echoed louder than a village town crier's horn. I wondered if he had swallowed a microphone; clearly, his oversized stomach had room for it. This time, he had invited his gambling buddies for an impromptu street dance.
"Na me be the CHAM...PIOOOOOON OF WARRI! Warri no dey carry last!" he yelled, blissfully unaware that his life was a masterclass in carrying last.
Meanwhile, one of his friends was actively recording him to boost his own TikTok account. The original guy who started filming his antics had already crossed 300,000 followers. I began to wonder if social media was just waiting for this man to lose his mind completely.
Why not join them? I thought, frustration finally giving way to opportunism. My rent was expiring soon anyway, and earplugs weren't helping. I pulled out my phone and started a livestream: "My Warri neighbor is at it again."
I started with a modest 100 followers, but within minutes, people flooded the stream.
"That's a wild neighbor you've got there," one comment read.
"Bro has actual moves!" another chimed in.
"We found the Nigerian Michael Jackson!"
Someone asked for his age, so I spoke up, sharing a few details about the compound legend. On my second phone—which possessed a camera so sharp it could zoom into next week—I recorded high-definition clips of his dancing.
When I finally ended the live stream, I had gained over 2,000 followers in a single sitting.
I immediately went to work. I pulled out my video editing apps, added voiceovers, spiced up the visuals, and posted the final cut.
When I woke up the next morning, my follower count had skyrocketed past 10,000. Suddenly, the noise didn't bother me as much. Maybe the angels from my dream had handed me this idea on their way out.
"I should buy this man a whole crate of booze with this money," I laughed to myself, scheming new ways to turn him into the ultimate viral sensation.
The initial thrill of the payout felt great—until reality set in. Behind every broken man is often a woman quietly bearing the weight of his chaos.
I remembered how his wife endured his outbursts. She didn't even live with him anymore, yet she still came over daily just to cook his meals and ensure he was fed. She was a good woman, tied to a man who was rapidly dancing his way into madness.
That evening, I waited for her outside after she finished cooking. Before she left for the night, I approached her and confessed what I had done.
At first, she was furious. I dropped to my knees, explaining how I had fallen for the same temptation as everyone else. But then I opened my earnings dashboard and showed her the money. It was a substantial amount.
I promised to give her every single Naira.
She broke down in tears, overwhelmed by the harsh reality of what her husband had become to the internet. I told her she had grounds to take action against everyone exploiting him. Since she knew her way around social media, she recorded a video that very night.
In the video, she called out the creators who had turned her family’s hardship into a content factory while she suffered in silence. She brought me onto the screen, publicly praying for me for coming clean, while firmly calling out the rest. I shared her video, posted her account details for support, and called on others to respect people's dignity before hitting "record."
The video went viral for a completely different reason.
Donations started pouring into her account. The creators who had built their platforms on her husband's antics quickly came forward to apologize, transferring massive portions of their earnings to avoid public backlash and legal trouble. Almost overnight, she became a millionaire.
Community members and professionals stepped in. Therapists from different states offered their services to help him get sober and address his mental health. Over time, the man got the help he desperately needed, reconciled with his wife, and truly turned his life around.
Eventually, they launched a family YouTube channel. He still danced, but this time, he was sober, healthy, and actually in control of his talent. He truly became the champion he used to shout about.
As for me? I became their official video editor, earning more than enough to resign from my teaching job.
Bye-bye to the stress of managing a (Go.v..schl) classroom of eighty students without a microphone!

What a lovely story, but I’m actually a bit disappointed that the drunk dancer on your veranda eventually sobered up, and I also find it hard to believe that therapists offer their help for free. When they turn up, they’ll present their bill too, and this is, of course, based on the income the woman finally generates through all the donations. I read your story in one go; the first half in particular was really entertaining and made me laugh. You’ve got a lovely storytelling style – personally, I found the reveal of the twist in the story a bit less compelling, but you’ve woven a brilliant ending into it. Brilliant! Thank you for taking part.
Your art also fits great. Well done. I am super proud of you. You are not in TikTok but if you invest a bit more time you can make as an (online) artist.
Please, add #story after #fiction

Well, I actually think it was a good thing he sobered up! If you take a peak at his past, his background explains why he ended up that way. He actually came from a wealthy family—his childhood was basically better than that of their village King. Sadly, his dad died in a targeted robbery while traveling with a huge sum of money, leaving him alone with his mum. Even without going to school, he was doing well until two years after his marriage, when his mum died in a trailer crash.
That grief wrecked his blooming business and his sanity, which is how the domestic violence started. His wife had to step back and leave with the kids for safety, though she was wise enough to help manage some of his remaining shops to keep the family afloat. Grief drove him to heavy drinking and gambling, wasting his winnings on fake friends and alcohol. So sobering up was really his only way out.
About the therapists—they definitely weren’t free! The bills were real, but negotiated low-cost sessions alongside the social media donations helped pay for it all over a long period (about a year to a year and a half).
Also, I am actually on TikTok! Still building up my video creation skills in secret, but taking it step by step alongside my comics. I really appreciate your thoughts on my art!
🤔
Here they would say the man is confused and this is the normal environment of the children.
Before you ask: Women are never labelled as confused, never loose their sanity, unlike men according to judges.
Perhaps we should send over your mum with belt, stick and make that spoiled, lazy arse with all those excuses run....
😐
This booming vote is yours and well deserved.
❤️🍀
For real, in this case, I think the slippers alone will be enough to give him an instant brain reset 😂. Not to mention the sacred belt (Dad's thick belt). If madness were human, he'd be calling hell's network to tell them he's retired😂😂
Thanks for the vote🦸

Awnn, my head's swelling now—hehe.
Thanks for the compliment! I didn't expect it to come across that way, since I wrote this when I didn't have much of a story idea.
☺️🤗

....
I assume you took the bottle from the neighbour and are dancing right now....
🕺
Haha of course, 🤣 sadly I don't do alcohol but I've learnt enough moves to dance.
It’s a brilliant way to build one’s own success on the misery of others... Very well done!
True, and some people are praying for this kind of opportunity. This shows there's a right way to do things, even if the alternative looks nice. (Sorry it took me so long to reply!)
