What a lovely story, but I’m actually a bit disappointed that the drunk dancer on your veranda eventually sobered up, and I also find it hard to believe that therapists offer their help for free. When they turn up, they’ll present their bill too, and this is, of course, based on the income the woman finally generates through all the donations. I read your story in one go; the first half in particular was really entertaining and made me laugh. You’ve got a lovely storytelling style – personally, I found the reveal of the twist in the story a bit less compelling, but you’ve woven a brilliant ending into it. Brilliant! Well, I actually think it was a good thing he sobered up! If you take a peak at his past, his background explains why he ended up that way. He actually came from a wealthy family—his childhood was basically better than that of their village King. Sadly, his dad died in a targeted robbery while traveling with a huge sum of money, leaving him alone with his mum. Even without going to school, he was doing well until two years after his marriage, when his mum died in a trailer crash.
That grief wrecked his blooming business and his sanity, which is how the domestic violence started. His wife had to step back and leave with the kids for safety, though she was wise enough to help manage some of his remaining shops to keep the family afloat. Grief drove him to heavy drinking and gambling, wasting his winnings on fake friends and alcohol. So sobering up was really his only way out.
About the therapists—they definitely weren’t free! The bills were real, but negotiated low-cost sessions alongside the social media donations helped pay for it all over a long period (about a year to a year and a half).
