Lando Norris Wins a Dramatic 2026 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort

in #dutch • 2 months ago

The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix certainly didn't disappoint. In what could be Formula 1's final visit to Zandvoort for the foreseeable future, Lando Norris turned pole position into victory – but getting there was anything but straightforward.

Norris won for McLaren ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, while Saturday's Sprint winner George Russell completed the podium for Mercedes.

Verstappen's home race ends almost immediately

For the thousands of orange-clad Max Verstappen fans, the afternoon turned sour incredibly quickly.

Verstappen had qualified only seventh, meaning a victory already looked difficult. Then disaster struck on the opening lap. The Dutchman lost control of his Red Bull at the banked final corner following rain before the start, crashing heavily into the barriers.

Fortunately, Verstappen escaped the accident without injury, but his Dutch Grand Prix was over almost before it had started.

The incident caused a red flag and completely changed the character of the race.

Norris versus Antonelli

After the restart, Antonelli produced a fantastic launch and passed Norris into Turn 1. Suddenly the championship leader was in control.

However, Norris wasn't finished.

McLaren played the strategy game well, and Norris eventually regained the advantage. Once back in front, he made his tyres last and crossed the finish line around ten seconds ahead of Antonelli.

It was Norris' second consecutive Grand Prix victory after also winning in Hungary, and another sign that McLaren has become a serious force during this part of the season.

Behind them, Russell finished third after his excellent Sprint victory on Saturday. Lewis Hamilton brought his Ferrari home fourth, followed by teammate Charles Leclerc.

Oscar Piastri finished sixth, with Liam Lawson seventh. Nico Hülkenberg, Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly completed the top ten.

Goodbye to Zandvoort?

There was an extra emotional dimension to this race. The 2026 edition is expected to be the last Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort for the foreseeable future.

Since returning to Formula 1 in 2021, the circuit has become famous for its enormous orange crowds, its old-school layout and, of course, Verstappen mania.

The home hero didn't get his fairytale ending, but the spectators certainly got drama.

Norris leaves the Netherlands with another victory, Antonelli strengthens his position in the championship, and Zandvoort says goodbye – at least for now – after one memorable final Formula 1 weekend.
