The Little Things

I never imagined that taking care of my brother would mean learning so many little details.

I know how he likes his pillow arranged, what his favorite songs are, and what jokes make him burst out laughing when his treatment leaves him feeling down.

I also know his difficult days—the ones when he doesn’t want to talk, when he stares out the window and seems to be far away, even when I’m sitting right beside him.

I often wish I could find the perfect words to restore his hope. But I’ve come to realize that it’s not always necessary to say anything. Sometimes it’s enough just to bring him some water, tuck in his blanket, or sit in silence while holding his hand.

I don’t have a cure for his illness. Nor do I know what tomorrow holds for us. The only thing I can offer him is my company, and I’ve discovered that this small gesture can become a refuge.

Perhaps caring for someone is precisely about that: reminding him that, even in his darkest moments, he doesn’t have to go through them alone.
