Do Fanta, Sprite, and Juice Count Toward Your 2–3 Liters a Day?

in #fanta4 days ago

We often hear that we should drink 2–3 liters per day. This immediately creates an important question: does that mean 2–3 liters of water, or does your morning juice, afternoon Sprite, and suspiciously large bottle of Fanta count too?

The good news is that water isn't the only thing that counts.

Your body needs fluids, and most drinks provide them. If you drink 500 ml of Sprite, that is still mostly water, and your body absolutely uses that fluid. The same applies to Fanta, juice, tea, coffee, sparkling water, and sugar-free soft drinks.

So theoretically, someone drinking two liters of sugar-free Sprite is getting plenty of fluid.

But that doesn't mean it's the ideal strategy.

What about sugar?

Regular Fanta, Sprite, Coca-Cola, and many fruit juices contain significant amounts of sugar. Drink large quantities and you can easily consume hundreds of extra calories without feeling particularly full.

Juice is especially sneaky. It sounds healthy because it comes from fruit, but drinking several glasses can provide a surprisingly large amount of sugar. Eating the actual fruit normally gives you more fiber and makes you feel fuller.

Sugar-free Fanta or Sprite doesn't have the same calorie problem. It can therefore be a reasonable part of your daily fluid intake. However, plain water remains the simplest choice: no sugar, no calories, inexpensive, and excellent for hydration.

You also get water from food

Another forgotten detail is that your fluid intake doesn't come exclusively from drinks. Fruit, vegetables, soups, yogurt and many other foods contain substantial amounts of water.

And 2–3 liters isn't a magical requirement for everyone. Your needs vary with body size, temperature, exercise, diet, pregnancy and health conditions.

The practical conclusion?

Water should probably be your main drink, but everything doesn't have to be water. Tea, coffee, sparkling water, sugar-free soft drinks and moderate amounts of juice all contribute to hydration.

Your body isn't standing at the entrance with a clipboard saying: "Sorry, that's Fanta. Doesn't count."
