The Hidden Tax on Every Night Out — And How Antwerpen Diners Are Skipping It

You never see it on the receipt. But you pay it every single time.

Economists would call it a friction cost. Your friend group calls it "ugh, where should we eat?" I call it the hidden tax on every night out — and once you see it, you can't unsee it.

We spent months studying how people in Antwerpen actually dine (we're the team building MealApp, a restaurant app, so this is quite literally our day job). Here's the invoice nobody hands you:

💸 Tax #1: The Indecision Tax — 40 minutes per dinner

The average group spends 35–45 minutes deciding where to eat. Not eating. Deciding. Multiply that by hourly wages and a group of five burns more value arguing about pizza than the pizza itself costs.

Time is the only currency you can't refund — and restaurants have been quietly taxing it for decades.

💸 Tax #2: The No-Reservation Gamble — the risk premium

Walk in without a booking on a Friday and you're buying a lottery ticket: maybe a table, maybe a 45-minute sidewalk wait, maybe a hungry retreat to a worse restaurant nearby. That uncertainty has a real cost — you either overpay with your time or undershoot on quality. Every. Single. Week.

💸 Tax #3: The Generosity Leak — €15–20/month

Every group has one. The person who says "I'll just pay, send it later." Nobody sends it later. Our informal tracking put this silent leak at €15–20 per month per group — not theft, just friction. Uneven splits, forgotten transfers, social awkwardness monetized.

💸 Tax #4: The App-Switching Fee

Discovery in one app. Booking by phone. Delivery in another app. Bill split over a bank transfer. The user becomes unpaid middleware stitching four products together — and pays for the stitching with attention, the scarcest asset of the decade.

So we built the exemption.

One app. The entire evening, end to end:

🔍 Discover — restaurants near you, live location, real menus, real availability
📅 Reserve — table booked in seconds, no phone calls, no gamble
🛵 Order — delivery or pickup, with live rider tracking down to the minute
💳 Settle — pay, tip, and split the bill so everyone pays their own share from their own phone — before dessert arrives

That's MealApp — live right now in Antwerpen. Free to use. Built to hand the hidden tax back to you.

Because the best dinner isn't the cheapest one.

It's the one where nothing was wasted getting to it.
