A guy returned a library magazine 132 years late and got away with it

This one made my whole day.

A man in Concord, New Hampshire walked into the Concord Public Library and handed back a magazine. Normal enough, except it was the September 1894 issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. The library worked out how late it was: 48,220 days. The fine would have been $12,055.

He paid nothing. On September 1st the library started a fine freeze that runs for the next year. It wipes out overdue fines people already owe and stops new ones from piling up. The guy, John, read about it in the Concord Monitor and figured now was the time. Good timing on his part.

The best bit is he has no idea how the magazine ended up at his house. He just had a 130-year-old magazine lying around and decided to sort it out. I love that. There was a pile of old stuff in that house somewhere, and one day he actually looked at it and thought, right, this belongs to the library.

It's not going back on the shelf. Way too old for that. The library said it'll probably go in their Concord Room instead, which sounds like a better place for it anyway.

I keep thinking about whoever borrowed it in 1894 and then just never brought it back. They got away with it too, in the end.
