If you're using a GLP-1 medication such as Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Zepbound® or Mounjaro®, you may have noticed increased hair shedding.

So, can GLP-1 weight loss cause hair loss?

It can be associated with increased hair shedding, particularly during significant or rapid weight loss. But that doesn't necessarily mean the medication itself is directly damaging the hair.

Why can it happen?

Rapid weight loss, reduced food intake, and changes in nutrition can put stress on the body and temporarily push more hair follicles into a resting phase. This can result in increased shedding, sometimes several weeks or months later.

What can you do?

During GLP-1 weight loss, pay attention to:

  • Protein intake to support muscle and overall nutrition
  • A balanced diet rather than overly restrictive eating
  • Adequate hydration
  • Strength training to help preserve muscle
  • Sustainable weight loss rather than trying to lose weight as quickly as possible

Nutrients such as iron, zinc, vitamin D and vitamin B12 can also be important for overall health. However, don't assume you need supplements simply because you're experiencing hair shedding.

When should you get help?

If hair loss is severe, persistent, patchy, or concerning, speak with a healthcare professional. Hair loss can have many possible causes, and it's important not to automatically blame it on a GLP-1 medication.

GLP-1 weight loss is about more than watching the number on the scale.

Supporting your nutrition, muscle, hair health and overall wellbeing should be part of the journey too.
