The Diary Game: My First Experience Controlling Traffic During CDS

My CDS Activity

Today, 10th September 2026, was another interesting day for me as I joined my fellow corps members for our Community Development Service (CDS).

As we all know, CDS is one of the important programmes of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). My CDS group is with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), so our activities are mainly centred on road safety and educating road users.

We arrived at the FRSC headquarters in the morning, where one of the FRSC officers gave us a lecture. He explained some important things about roads and traffic management.

Among the things he taught us were the different types of roads, such as private roads or pathways, two-lane highways, dual carriageways, and expressways.

He also explained some types of road junctions, including T-junctions, Y-junctions, roundabouts, and others.
The lecture was really helpful because it prepared us for the practical activity we were going to carry out afterwards.

My First Experience Controlling Traffic

After the lecture, we moved to Onitsha Head Bridge to put what we had learnt into practice. We went there with an FRSC officer who guided us throughout the exercise.

Our major responsibility was to help control motorists and pedestrians and ensure that traffic moved properly. The main reason for this was to reduce the possibility of accidents and protect lives and property.

Honestly, this was where the real experience started.
It was my first time standing on the road to control vehicles and pedestrians, and I won't lie, I was scared at first.

The road was very busy, and some drivers were not helping matters at all. Some of them drove recklessly and ignored traffic rules. I even saw a vehicle trying to overtake a tanker truck at a traffic point. I was like, "What is this person trying to do?" 😂

At one point, a car almost crashed into a truck because of reckless driving. That particular moment scared me because I realized that one careless action could cause a serious accident and affect many people.

The situation was even more frightening because Onitsha Head Bridge is a very busy area, with plenty of vehicles, pedestrians, traders, and other commercial activities going on.

For a moment, I understood better why the work of road safety officers is not an easy one. Standing on the road and directing traffic requires courage, alertness, and patience.

What We Do as FRSC CDS Members

Our CDS group is mainly concerned with promoting road safety and helping to educate the public.

Some of our responsibilities include:

• Controlling traffic when necessary.
• Educating motorists and pedestrians.
• Creating road safety awareness among students.
• Visiting organisations and government agencies to promote road safety.
• Educating the general public on the importance of obeying traffic rules.
• Being good ambassadors of the FRSC.

We were also reminded that every vehicle should be properly checked before it is taken on the road.

Some of the things motorists should check include tyres, side mirrors, and the general condition of the vehicle.

These little things may look simple, but they can go a long way in preventing accidents.

After CDS

When I returned home in the afternoon, I was already very tired. The road activity really drained my energy. I took my bath, ate my lunch, and then rested for some time.

Later in the evening, I prepared some beans and parboiled them ahead of tomorrow. I did this so that I could easily take the food along to my workplace and enjoy my meal without much stress.

Conclusion

Today was really an interesting and memorable day for me. I learnt a lot about road safety, traffic control, and the importance of being careful whenever we are using the road.

Most importantly, I realized that road safety is not only the responsibility of FRSC officers. Every driver, motorcyclist, cyclist, and pedestrian has a role to play.

We should all learn to obey traffic rules because a few minutes of impatience or reckless driving can lead to something that may affect someone's entire life.
