I think so long the person does not know that it is an experiment and all environment is existing and living its way like in Matrix then it is okay, but once the person could find our what is what then it could have dramatic results and impact on the person.

I am glad that it made such emotional impact that is the goal of any writer to make the reaqder to think and our brain to try to solve the problem :)
