The robot that takes care of plants.

The robot that takes care of plants.

Imagine a plant that could venture out on its own in search of sunlight—or even ask for water when it’s thirsty. This might sound like a dream for those who always end up with dead plants due to a lack of care, but that’s no longer an issue: Google developers have built a robot called "Sprout" that does exactly that. It’s essentially a mobile planter on wheels, equipped with cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence.

The project combines a real plant with a mobile robotic platform capable of navigating indoor spaces. Most intriguingly, Sprout doesn’t rely solely on pre-programmed commands for every scenario. By using models from Google’s Gemini family, the robot can interpret visual information, identify elements in its environment, and make decisions as it carries out the tasks for which it was designed.

When it needs to find a better-lit spot, for example, it can search for a suitable area and move there; to do this, it uses a robotic base called Turtlebot 4, equipped with mapping and obstacle-detection capabilities. An artificial intelligence system helps interpret the surroundings, while navigation mechanisms carry out the movements. The plant itself also plays a role in this interaction: a sensor installed in the pot monitors moisture levels, and when it detects a need for water, Sprout can alert a person and ask for help.

It also uses Gemini Live to engage in real-time voice conversations, allowing the robot to explain its actions, answer questions, and interact with the people around it. Rather than simply providing answers on a screen, Gemini Live becomes part of a system that perceives its environment, decides on a course of action, and executes physical movements.

And although Sprout was created to care for a plant, these same principles could be applied to robots designed for assistance, monitoring, or space automation. Perhaps in the future, it won’t just be people who seek out a spot in the sun—some plants might be able to do so, too, with the help of machines.
