The world’s first screen fabric.
The world’s first screen fabric.

Imagine being able to watch videos, look up information, or control applications directly on the sleeve of your clothing—as if the fabric itself were a smartphone screen. Researchers at the National University of Singapore have made this possible by developing an "electronic fabric" capable of displaying images and responding to touch, without the need for a conventional screen attached to the garment.
In the prototype presented, 54 fibers were used to create a 96-by-54-pixel display integrated directly into the sleeve of a garment. While the resolution is still significantly lower than that of a smartphone, it is sufficient to run simple applications. During testing, the scientists demonstrated video playback, the use of a calculator, and the display of digital information; the system was also featured in demonstrations involving sensors and voice commands. However, developing a flexible display was only part of the challenge.
