Animal Activities #91
Deep in the middle of an African savannah resided a young elephant known as Tembo. Tembo was an energetic animal who was interested in exploring beyond his herd boundaries. Tembo enjoyed running through long grass, playing by the river and chasing birds across trees. However, his mother taught him many things including the fact that despite being beautiful, the savannah could be dangerous. Therefore, she gave him some very vital instructions. These were not to stray away from the herd, to pay attention to the orders of the old elephants, to protect the young ones in case of danger, and return before night comes.

Sometimes Tembo felt that the rules were irksome, but he loved and honored his mother, and tried his best to adhere to them.
In the morning, the herd would move for several miles looking for grass and water. The journey would not be smooth. At times it was very hot, there was mud and hills to climb. Tembo noticed that the old elephants did not grumble or moan about the arduous journey. On the contrary, they moved steadily one step at a time. That inspired Tembo to assist the herd. He helped the young elephants in the group during the journey. Whenever a young elephant was tired, Tembo would urge him to move on. In case they arrived at a river, Tembo did not rush, but waited. Other elephants began to notice his efforts and discipline.
Once, drought hit the savannah region. The rivers reduced in size, the grass dried up and most of the animals found it hard to get water and food. Tembo had to travel long distances from his herd to where there was water.

It was tiring and he felt like leaving the herd and trying to look for some water on his own but he remembered the rules which his mother had taught him. Tembo remained with the herd, listened to the instructions given by the old elephants and kept on walking even if he was very tired. Each day he fulfilled his duties without making any excuse.
Several days passed and the herd finally reached the far away water hole. The elephants quenched their thirst and took rest in the shade of the trees. The old elephants praised Tembo for his patience and determination. The elephants told Tembo that getting to the water hole did not only require strength but everybody must work together. Tembo understood that by being disciplined, he would be ready for such a tough journey. Had Tembo done otherwise, he could have put himself in danger.

Starting from that day, Tembo would serve as a role model for the younger generation of elephants. He realized that not everything is going to be accomplished instantly. The labor can be tough at times, and the regulations can be quite restraining, but both can serve as a shield and take us to our destination.
More importantly, Tembo learned that consistency will ensure that even small acts lead to significant accomplishments. Whatever the situation was, good or bad, Tembo kept on doing the right thing. It might take a long time, but those who persevere will ultimately get where they want to go.
