Animal Activities #91
The Rooster Who Saved the Farm
Kofi, the happy farmer Kofi was a brave little cockerel that would wake up everyday on his tranquil farm that was very open and had high mango trees everywhere. He had very shiny red head plumes, his wings were dazzling gold brown feathers and his tail was full of his many colours that made shimmering in the sunlight when he walked about. Every morning, before the sun would pop over the hilltops Kofi would say "cock-a-doodle-doo" and wakened up farmer Mr. Ade and the animals!
Kofi was a brave and clever boy as well as a handsome one. Kofi was keeping an eye on everything around the farm. The cows were happily munching the grass, the sheep were wandering from the grass to the longer grass while the goats jumped over the wooden fence. Kofi loved the farm because it was his home.
Kofi had been out in the farm one night at the start of the dry season and he saw something unusual. All the animals were going to bed, and suddenly he saw a really thin column of smoke coming out of the barn. He thought it was dust cloud at first, and then he smelled the smoke.
Kofi, scared that he flew up to the top of the tallest fencing and roared as loud as he could.
"Cock-a-doodle-doo! Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
All of a sudden, Mr. Ade was awakened. He peeped through the window and saw smoke coming out of the barn.
He ran outside and got a bucket and ran to the barn.
You could hear the chickens clucking and the cows mooing nervously.
Mr. Ade saw a small oil lamp had fallen on a pile of dry hay. Flames were beginning to take flight.
Fortunately with the assistance of his neighbours he was able to put out the flames before the entire barn was consumed. Luckily none of the animals were harmed.
The next day, Mr Ade ushered all the animals into the cattle shed. Smiling at Kofi with great pride, he said, "You may be small, but your brave act saved all of us."
Kofi was then king on the farm from then on. None of the animals dared to speak to him any more and the cross goat stopped teasing him.
Kofi would still call the morning, as he woke up everyone. But his call was not just a call every morning, It was a proud call from the bravest little guardian to everyone on the farm.
And every time the sun was shining on the greener fields, Kofi would be standing on the fence, raised his head and sing as loud as possible, to the golden sky.
"Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
The farm was safe. And the smallest of heroes had just learned a lesson… No matter how small, courage isn't about the size of the hero. It's about knowing the right thing, and doing it.
