"Pick and Write" is a fantastic contest that is doing a great service to farmers and the agricultural sector.
Agriculture is a subject very close to my heart, which is why I participate in this with genuine.
Let's first of all understand what is Crop Breeding.

What is Crop Breeding?

Crop breeding refers to the process of plant breeding (improving plant varieties).

It is the oldest and most important field of agriculture.

Simple Definition:

Crop breeding means ;

combining two good crop varieties to create a new, superior variety.

Just as humans breed animals of superior lineage to produce better offspring, scientists breed superior crops to create even better ones.

Understand with an example:

Suppose you have two types of wheat:

Variety A: It has a very high yield but is highly susceptible to disease.

Variety B:

It has a lower yield but is resistant to disease.

A crop breeder (expert) will cross-breed these two. This will result in a new variety, 'C', which possesses the "qualities of both"

meaning high yield combined with disease resistance.

What are the objectives of crop breeding?

  1. Increased Yield:

Producing more grain.

  1. Disease and Pest Resistance:

Developing crops that do not succumb to diseases.

  1. Climate Resilience:

Developing crops that can withstand heat, cold, drought, and saline (salty) soil.

  1. Better Taste and Nutrition:

Producing crops that are tastier and richer in protein and vitamins.

  1. Faster Maturity:

Developing crops that mature in 4 months instead of 6.

Methods of Crop Breeding:

  1. Selection:

Choosing the best plants from the field and sowing their seeds the following year. This is the oldest method.

  1. Hybridization:

Crossing two different, high-quality varieties. Examples include hybrid maize and hybrid rice.

  1. Mutation Breeding:

Inducing new traits by altering seeds using radiation or chemicals.

  1. Genetic Modification:

This is the most advanced method of crop breeding, which we discussed earlier.

Summary:

If genetic modification involves cutting and splicing DNA in a laboratory, then "crop breeding" is the broader term for the practice.

creating superior, high-yielding, and resilient seeds for the farmer.
