INKtober 2026 - Toss the Dice

in ᴀʀᴛ & ᴀʀᴛɪꜱᴛꜱ • 2 days ago

The first thing that comes to mind with ‘toss’ is, of course, tossing a coin, but that doesn't seem like a very original subject to draw. ‘Tossing a salad’ was another option, but that didn't seem all that great either. I’m no whiz at drawing—or drawing hands, for that matter—and certainly not at depicting lettuce leaves being tossed together in a bowl. I could have drawn someone tossing a basketball or something similar, but ‘tossing the dice’ seemed nice and easy. Well, easy... I’d actually forgotten that this involves cubes, and I’m not good at drawing cubes either. There’s clearly something wrong with my eyes, my brain, or both.
They say you have to draw loads of cubes and boxes because then you can draw anything—and if you can’t do that, you can’t draw.

It’s been a while since I was drawing 100 to 300 of them a day, yet drawing them still went wrong regularly; that really says something about my lack of talent, doesn't it? 🤣 In any case, this practice gave me an idea—after all, drawing a ‘Ludo’ game with a die hovering above it and a hand in the act of throwing would be far too complex for me.

I struggled quite a bit with drawing the cube (or box) again and thus far I find this the worst and most time consuming drawing. How disappointing.

As you can see, it looks far from perfect. At least I hope the sense of movement ,("motion blur") is there.
With this many dice, I figured I’d be bound to roll the number of eyes I wanted.
And with a touch of red watercolor, it definitely looks better.

The edges of the die are rounded. As is well known, the eyes on opposite sides add up to seven.

INKtober prompt: toss

Sort:

I think your dices are fine, anyway I'm sure you can do more complicated figures too. I like the movement sense.

I had thought of the dices but I didn't find 9n the dictionary an exemple of a phrase using that verb for this action. An option was tossibg the coin, of course haha. Let's see what I can do.

There's also: toss the salad (tossing is throwing something light) it can basically everything. I should have made the salad. This was too difficult. It's a good thing cartoonist exist.

How about: toss an egg?

If you ask me whether I heard the sound of multiple dice falling and bouncing off the table—well, yes, I did. And what’s more, I think anyone with a gambling streak would try to guess how those dice will land on the table surface, lol :)

The gambler will also notice something else...
