Sri Lankan new Javelin Star | Rumesh Tharanga
As a small Sporting nation, we have been waiting for this moment for a long time. It's the rise of our new champion, Rumesh Tharanga, on the biggest stages. In a country where track and field gets little attention, let alone javelin, he's done something big enough to make the whole nation look up to him.
2026 has been a dream season for him. Competing against world and Olympic champions, he won the gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the 2026 Diamond League, and the 2026 World Ultimate Championship. He has announced his coronation in style with consistent 85m+ throws and by becoming the world number one in the rankings.
No Sri Lankan athlete has ever reached his level before, and at just 23, he's already become the best the country has ever produced.
The beginning of his journey and the rise
He was born on 21 March 2003 in Kalutara. He started as a fast bowler in cricket, Sri Lanka's national obsession. But following in his father's footsteps and under coach Tony Prasanna, he pursued javelin in 2017. Then the rest is history.
He made his international debut at the 2019 Asian Youth Championships in Hong Kong, and with a throw of 61.62 m, he finished in 6th place. Then, step by step, he climbed the ladder in his lengths and consistency. With more international training and experience, he reached his peak in no time. Neeraj Chopra of India won Olympic gold in 2021, and Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan won it in 2024; together, they made South Asia fall in love with javelin. And then comes Rumesh.
- 2022 - 7th at the World U20 Championships in Cali (69.98m)
- 2024 - Gold in Mokpo, Asian Throwing Championship (85.45 m), first throw past 80m
- 2025 - Fourth at the 2025 Asian Championships in Gumi (83.37 m)
- 2025 - Fourth at the World Championships
With a steady start, he really made his mark this year.
- August 2026 - Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow, 89.75 m, beating India's Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra
This is Sri Lanka's first-ever Commonwealth javelin gold, its first athletics gold in 76 years, and its sixth Commonwealth gold medal in any sport.

He won 4 out of five qualification rounds, and the finals as well. He became the first Sri Lankan ever to become a Diamond League champion. And his 92.62m throw in Rome is the second-best Asian throw in history.

At the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, only the elite athletes from all events are represented, and this win puts Sri Lanka on the map as a nation with genuine talent..
That's why I called this year a dreamy season for him. He will be representing Sri Lanka at the 2026 Asian Games, and his ultimate target will be the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
So, finally, I have to say we are so proud of him, and special gratitude for carrying the hope of 22 million people of a small country bin the biggest stage.
