Hello steemians, and greetings to everyone in this community. Today, I am happy to share another pencil drawing from my sketchbook. This time, I decided to capture a simple but beautiful moment—a dog lowering its face into the water to take a drink. What attracted me to this scene was not just the dog itself, but the reflection beneath the water. I felt that combining the animal with its reflection would make the drawing more captivating and give it a peaceful, natural feeling. So, in this post, I’ll take you through how I created it with pencil, from the first sketch to the final details.

Drawing process

Step 1

‎I began with a light pencil sketch to establish the general shape of the dog's head. Working lightly gave me enough freedom to make corrections whenever something did not look right.

Step 2

‎Once I was comfortable with the basic outline, I started developing the dog's face. I used darker pencil strokes around the eyes while leaving small areas lighter. This helped create the impression of light reflecting in the eyes. I then worked around the forehead and cheeks, following the direction of the dog's fur with short, controlled strokes.

Step 3

‎next I focused on the ears and neck areas; I used a mixture of light and dark marks to create folds and texture instead of filling the entire area with solid graphite.

Step 4

‎next, I used curved pencil lines around the dog's mouth and nose to create the ripples spreading across the water. I made some lines darker and others lighter so they wouldn't look too artificial.

Step 5

‎The reflection underneath the water was the detail that brought the entire composition together. Instead of copying the dog's face exactly, I made the reflection darker, softer, and slightly distorted.

Step 6

‎After completing the major parts, I went back over the drawing and looked for areas that needed more contrast. I strengthened some of the darkest sections around the face, eyes, ears, and reflection. I also cleaned unwanted pencil marks around the edges with my eraser. Below is my final result.

‎When I look at the finished drawing, I see more than just a dog drinking water. I see a quiet moment captured in time.
