Chapter 16: The Phantom Nerve and a Promise in the Dark
Deep Dive Protocol and the White Room
The voice of the Suit didn't just echo; it crawled through my skull like a million digital spiders. The pitch-black void in my left eye began to spread. Sickly, obsidian veins of corrupted code pulsed beneath the skin of my cheek, creeping toward my brainstem.
I collapsed onto the filthy concrete of the subway tunnel, screaming as a freezing, metallic agony tore through my nervous system. I was back in the real world, but Pan-Asia wasn't done with me. The Suit had planted a Trojan horse in my visual cortex during our digital dive.
"Yun Feng!" Lu Yan’s voice cut through the static in my ears. Her heavy mechanical boots slammed against the ground as she dropped to her knees beside me. Her human blue eye widened in horror. "Chen! His neural link is compromised! It’s a parasitic overwrite protocol!"
Old Chen didn't hesitate. He kicked aside a pile of smoldering Bronze Corps armor and slid next to me, ripping a grease-stained diagnostic scanner from his utility belt. The device shrieked an alarm the second it touched my temple.
"Dammit! That corporate parasite is trying to hijack his motor functions!" Chen roared, his mechanical arm whirring as he unsheathed a surgical laser scalpel. The blade hummed with a terrifying blue intensity. "Hold him down, Yan! If this black sludge hits his spinal column, he won't be Yun Feng anymore. He'll be a puppet in a white suit!"
Lu Yan’s chrome hands pinned my shoulders to the ground with hydraulic force. Despite her terrifying exterior, her touch was desperately gentle. "Stay with me, partner," she whispered.
"I have to sever the optic nerve manually," Chen grunted, sweat pouring down his scarred face. "No anesthesia, kid. Grit your teeth!"
The laser sliced into the flesh behind my left eye.
The pain was a blinding supernova. My mind violently rejected the trauma, plunging me into a forced hard reboot. The damp subway tunnel faded away, replaced by a suffocating, sterile memory I had spent seven years trying to bury.
Flashback.
It was a Pan-Asia black-site laboratory. Cold, white, and reeking of ozone. Long before we were street-level rebels, we were just naive corporate operatives—disposable assets. We were locked in adjacent glass containment cells, guinea pigs for their illegal "Project Soul-Eater" cybernetics.
I remembered looking through the blood-smeared glass. Lu Yan was fully human then, her face bruised but her eyes burning with unbroken defiance. They had scheduled her for the full Chrome-Conversion the next morning—a procedure that would strip away her humanity and turn her into a mindless corporate enforcer.
"Take my access card, Yun Feng," she had whispered through the vent, sliding a stolen encrypted keycard across the floor. She had taken a brutal beating from the guards to secure it.
"I'm not leaving you here," I had choked out, clutching the card.
"One of us has to survive to burn this place down," she smiled, a sad, desperate curve of her lips. "If you make it out, don't forget me. That's an order, colleague."
She had triggered the alarms, drawing the heavy security drones to her cell, buying me the exact sixty seconds I needed to escape into the city's underbelly. I lived, and she was dragged into the nightmare of chrome and wires.
End of Flashback.
"Breathe, kid! BREATHE!"
Old Chen’s harsh voice ripped me back to reality. I gasped, tasting copper and ash. The agonizing cold in my brain was gone. My left eye was completely blind, bandaged with a thick layer of synthetic coagulant, but the spreading black veins on my face were fading.
"I... I cut the hardware link and flooded the port with military-grade ICE," Chen panted, wiping blood from his hands. "You lost the eye, Yun Feng. But you kept your soul. That Pan-Asia bastard can't reach you anymore."
I slowly sat up, my head pounding like a war drum. I looked up at Lu Yan. Her terrifying cybernetic chassis was battered and scarred, but her blue eye held the exact same defiant spark it had seven years ago in that glass cell.
"I didn't forget you," I rasped, my voice hoarse. "I promised I'd come back."
Lu Yan’s metal lips softened into a faint, tragic smile. "You took your sweet time, Detective."
The emotional reunion was cut short by the blinking of a holographic projector built into Lu Yan’s mechanical wrist. The light cast eerie red shadows across the ruined subway tunnel.
"When you glitched the mainframe with that slum data, the Suit’s security protocols dropped for three seconds," Lu Yan said, her tone suddenly turning deadly serious. "I wasn't just sitting there. I downloaded the root directory of the violet shard."
She tapped her wrist, and a massive, terrifying holographic map of our city projected into the air.
"The Suit wasn't just trying to kill us," she explained, her voice turning cold. "Pan-Asia isn't just a greedy corporation anymore. They've weaponized the overwrite protocol. Look."
Thousands of red dots illuminated the map, all clustered in the slums and lower levels.
"In exactly twenty-four hours, Pan-Asia is going to broadcast a neuro-frequency through the city's ventilation and grid," Lu Yan said, pointing at the data streams. "It will forcibly overwrite the minds of every citizen in the lower sectors. Millions of people... their consciousness deleted, replaced by the Suit's programming. An instant, free, brainwashed army."
Old Chen dropped his scalpel, his face pale. "They're going to turn the whole damn city into their puppets."
I pushed myself up the concrete pillar, the pain in my missing eye completely eclipsed by a burning, absolute rage. The lines were drawn. There was no more running, no more hiding in the shadows. Pan-Asia was pure, unadulterated evil, and they were about to slaughter millions of innocent souls.
"Chen, pack up your gear," I said, drawing my heavy kinetic revolver. I loaded a fresh cylinder of armor-piercing rounds. "Lu Yan, prep your cannons."
"What's the plan?" Chen asked, racking his shotgun.
I stared at the glowing red hologram of the corporate headquarters. "We have twenty-four hours to break into the most heavily fortified building on the planet and put a bullet between the Suit's eyes. We're going to burn Pan-Asia to the ground."

You found the solution to make those loosing ends meet, although there's something missing, a few words extra words, 3-4, to refer to those earlier episodes and feelings/thoughts.
Pity of the eye, it was for sure thrilling what Chen did and the map she downloaded.
Knowing 'The Suit' is is better to be there within the next eight hours...still no food, nothing to drink or oil the joints.
I wonder if Chen's eyes give light in the dark or did he cut in the dark?
In advance I wish you, and above all your granddaughter, a happy celebration.
🥳
Skip the desk for a day or two!
🍀❤️
Thank you so much for the detailed feedback and the brilliant literary catch! I will definitely fine-tune those transition words in the next chapter. And thank you a million for the warm wishes for the family celebration! (Just a small correction, it's my little grandson turning 3, but the celebration joy is absolute! 🥳) I am indeed taking a well-deserved break from the desk these couple of days to enjoy the family time. Cheers!
Grandson it is! Congratulations to him🍀❤️
Thank you so much for the sweet wishes, @wakeupkitty! 💖 I am packing my bags right now to head back home. I'll step away from the keyboard and fully enjoy this family time. See you and the community next week!
