POLL: Do You Like to Write Poetry?
I love storytellers. Those old-fashioned storytellers from days gone by, days gone by as in the Middle Ages.
Those storytellers still exist, and you can hire them if you’re organising a medieval festival or, for example, want to liven up a birthday or other party.
Hiring a storyteller is certainly not cheap. Of course, the voice needs to be pleasant to listen to, so it’s wise to ask to tell a short story before you hire someone.
A storyteller isn’t someone who reads a story out in a monotonous voice or simply rattles it off. A good storyteller uses the voices of different characters and puts on a sort of play. That’s the way to captivate listeners. Incidentally, this is something I often find lacking in audiobooks: a captivating voice.
With a good narrator, even the dullest story or the most tedious, incomprehensible poem becomes a pleasure to listen to.
I also love telling stories and writing poems. I absolutely love poems that tell a story, preferably a fairy tale or a fable. There are quite a few of these in Old Dutch, and not just a few lines, no, hundreds of pages long. I’ve written this sort of poetic stories myself, and I still think they’re brilliant. That probably makes me my own biggest fan. Whenever I reread them, I’m amazed about what I wrote.
(To be honest, I don’t find all poems impressive or enjoyable, there are such a boring ones, and there’s nothing wrong with that.)
I also find that I enjoy writing a poem way more than reading one. This is most likely because I love puzzling over words, playing with double meanings, proverbs and sayings.
A story can be an existing (twisted) fairy tale, a fable, or something you’ve made up out of thin air. It can be narrative or in poetic form.
How many of you on Steemit write fictional stories and/or poems?
Who writes for pleasure, perhaps finding more joy in writing than in reading?
They say you have to read a lot to be able to write well. Is that true, or does the same apply here: that those bound by rules never really come to real #creativewriting?

I have to admit, some poems, I do not understand, no matter how many times I read them. And then I wonder, do I need to think a certain way haha. So, poems for me, it depends. I write them when I have an inspiration to. And for me to appreciate poems by others, I have to understand, else I don't appreciate. But when there are comments saying how good it is, I would scratch my head wondering how is it good? Then, I would end up not commenting because I do not know what to say haha.
I love story tellers too, inspiring ones especially. I do enjoy watching motivational story tellers because I need some form of motivation to pump me up sometimes. Even in movies or dramas, I enjoy watching characters who are story tellers. And I love story telling but mostly on my life stories or something I watched or heard. I think my brain is not as creative or imaginative as I want it to be sometimes. I've been thinking to participate in the Exquisite Corpse but my brain doesn't want to co-operate 😅But I do agree that the more we read, the more we experience or the more we hear, it does help with writing.

In participating in the Exquisite Corpse, there is (as it seems to me) NO necessarity to co-operate. Let your mind flow and spin up the story, or concatenate an independent fragment by some clever written connecting phrases. ;-)

Previously, I ONLY wrote poetry. Prose pieces gradually came to mind, really only through blogging here on Steem. Poetry is important to me because it allows me to write in a more controlled way. And that, in turn, helps me think in a more controlled way… Reading poetry was, of course, where it all began. But there are only a few that really speak to me (those by @ty-ty are definitely among them ;-)))

I like poems, though some are difficult to understand. Anyway they are the writer expression maybe not meant to be understood by others.
I also find storytelling poems very enjoyable, I love rhymes, so sometimes felt so inclined to chain on that game with words. But not for a while, I feel blocked in many ways. I like to play but sometimes I let myself get tangled up in rules (all right, I'm a mess haha)
So, yes but it depends on my mood.

I loved what you wrote about storytellers. It reminded me of the university "cuentacuentos"; we really enjoyed a seminar on that subject. It requires a certain knowledge and managment of the performing arts.
Playing around with different voices makes for a fun reading experience, too. I enjoy reading aloud. I used to read to my students and my daughter, changing my voice and dramatizing the text in some way. I think it's highly moving to start enjoy reading.
