I am a bit confused about the story. It seems Fanny's parents like him as you wrote, just his parents do not like him.
Next you write one is Dutch which is a nationality and the other is Christian... Dutch people are most like Christians (there are many types of) or they do not believe in anything, which started since 1960.
Two different religions would be no longer an issue. The Dutch learned to respect unlike many other nationalities and most likely that is what is going wrong in the country. Advantages are taken and people are abused.
I remember how one grandmother used the saying: if there are two believes/religions on a pillow the devil sleeps inbetween.
The devil stands for endless fights since if people from think in the same way there will never be peace of mind. If it comes to it the average human is far from flexible and respectful.
Its only a story not real so we read it just meaningful moral
