Curzon Hall, Dhaka

Dhaka is a city where history and modern life exist side by side. Among the many historical places in the city, Curzon Hall is one of the places that has always attracted me because of its beautiful architecture and historical importance.

Once I visited Curzon Hall with a familiar younger brother. It was not my first time seeing this place, but every visit gives me a different feeling. The historic buildings, beautiful gates, surrounding roads, and the overall environment make this part of the University of Dhaka campus quite special.

A Historic Landmark

Curzon Hall is a famous British-era architectural landmark in Dhaka. The foundation stone of the building was laid in 1904 by Lord Curzon, who was then the Viceroy of India. The building was later named after him.

Today, Curzon Hall is associated with the University of Dhaka and is used by the university's science-related academic departments. Because of its history and architecture, it is much more than just an academic building.

Beautiful Architecture

The first thing that caught my attention was the architecture. The bright red brick walls, arched windows, decorative details, and large gates give Curzon Hall a very distinctive appearance.

The architectural style reflects a combination of European influences with elements inspired by Mughal architecture. Because of this mixture, the building looks different from many other structures in Dhaka.

When I looked at the building from different angles, I felt that some parts looked almost like a royal palace. The corridors, arches, doors, and gates all have their own character. These small architectural details are probably one of the main reasons why the place remains attractive even after so many years.

My Experience of Visiting

I visited the area in the evening. The University of Dhaka campus is usually busy with students, and the surroundings of Curzon Hall were no exception.

Since this is an active university area, it is not a place where you can expect a quiet tourist environment. Still, I enjoyed walking around and exploring the parts that were accessible to me.

Personally, I think morning or daytime would be a better time to visit Curzon Hall if your main purpose is to appreciate the architecture and take photographs. In daylight, the brickwork, arches, windows, and other decorative details can be seen more clearly.

However, the evening also has its own charm. The illuminated windows and surrounding lights create a different atmosphere, especially for photography.

Surrounding Area

One thing I liked about this place is that the attraction is not limited to Curzon Hall itself. The surrounding University of Dhaka campus has many interesting buildings, roads, trees, and academic departments. The Botanical Department is also located nearby.

Walking through the surrounding roads gives you an opportunity to see different parts of the university campus and experience its academic environment. The roads around this area also have a pleasant appearance. If you have enough time, walking around instead of only visiting the main building can make the experience more enjoyable.

Another place that caught my attention during my visit was Shahidullah Hall Pond, located near Curzon Hall. I found the pond particularly beautiful at night.

The surroundings become quieter and the lights reflected around the water create a pleasant atmosphere. After spending time around the historic buildings, seeing the pond was a nice addition to my visit.

Another notable place near Curzon Hall is Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall, one of the residential halls of the University of Dhaka. The presence of several important university buildings and landmarks around the area makes exploring this part of Dhaka more interesting.

However, the University of Dhaka campus is quite large, so walking around the entire campus can become tiring, especially if you want to visit several locations in one trip.

My visit to Curzon Hall was a memorable experience because the place combines history, architecture, and the everyday academic life of the University of Dhaka.

What I liked most was the way the historic architecture stands within a busy modern university campus. The red-brick walls, arched windows, beautiful gates, surrounding roads, and nearby pond all create a unique environment.

If you are interested in historical architecture or photography, I think Curzon Hall is definitely worth visiting. I would personally recommend going during the daytime if you want to observe the architectural details carefully. At the same time, an evening visit can also be enjoyable because the illuminated building and Shahidullah Hall Pond create a different atmosphere.

For me, Curzon Hall is not simply an old building. It is a place where a part of Dhaka's history is still connected with the present-day academic life of the city.
