Shahbag Flower's Shop
My fellow Steemians,
Flowers are one of the most important part of daily life of Bangladesh. People use flowers for weddings, religious ceremonies, festivals, cultural programs, decorations, and expressing their love and respect towards someone or something. The flower business in Bangladesh has grown significantly over the years, especially in Dhaka city. It is cultivated at different parts of the country such as Jessore, Savar, Manikganj, Gazipur & most importantly in my own town Chuadanga. Farmers grow different varieties of flowers.
Dhaka is one of the largest flower markets in the country, and Shahbagh is a well known place to do wholesale and retail flower businesses. Every day, flowers arrive from different parts of the country at midnight or early morning by truck. Last week I was walking beside the Shahbag flower market. Then I thought a article should be written about this beautiful place & it’s cultural significance on surroundings and the whole city.
Different kinds of flower is found in shahbag flower market. Among them the most popular flower in our country are water Lily, Rose, Tuberose, Marigold, Gladiolus, Gerbera, Lily, Orchid,China rose, etc. Water Lily is the national flower in our country. Water lily is cultivated within the water, not on the dry ground. Around 40-50 permanent flower shop exists in shahbag & rest 30-40 are temporary. Some shop have name, others have no name. This shops are not so big, mainly 12-16 square meter area, every shop holding. Some of the flowers are arranged already in their designed form & others remain intact to be designed as per customer demand.
The price of flowers at Shahbagh generally remains reasonable and relatively stable on normal days. When there is no major festival, wedding season, or special occasion, the demand for flowers is comparatively low. As a result, traders can trade with customers at normal rate. However, the situation changes completely during festivals and special occasions. When events such as Pahela Baishakh (the first day of the Bengali New Year), Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Kali Puja, Valentine's Day, and the wedding season arrive, the demand for flowers increases suddenly. People then need large quantities of flowers to decorate their place. At the same time, the supply of flowers cannot always increase quickly enough to meet this sudden demand. Since flowers cannot be stored for a long time, traders have to depend on the available supply coming from flower-growing areas. When demand becomes much higher than supply, the market price naturally increases according to the theory of economics. Therefore, the flower business at Shahbagh is strongly influenced by the simple economic relationship between demand and supply.
Flowers have always had a special place in Bengali life. People use them to express love, respect, happiness, devotion, and sympathy. The market also reflects the emotional side of urban life. A person may buy a bouquet to express love, flowers to congratulate someone, or a garland to pay respect to a loved one. Another important aspect is the connection between rural Bangladesh and urban Dhaka. Farmers grow flowers in different parts of the country, while traders bring them to Shahbagh, where they become part of the city's celebrations and everyday life.
